INTRODUCTION
This is a short volume. It is short because its central message is very simple. It is also short because, although I will comment on what others have said and written, I have refrained from paraphrasing their work.
First, a question. How do you perceive the difference between humans and other animal species? Your answers will probably include some or all of the following. (I have omitted the answer that says we were made in God's image because I am only concerned with life on earth, but I do not think that what I shall write will conflict with any religious views).
We walk on two legs, not four. This has enabled us to use our hands with great dexterity.
We have larger brains and the additional intelligence has enabled us to develop our faculties in many ways. Sophisticated communication is probably the most important of these, whether written, oral, or through images.
We have the ability to create complicated structures such as buildings and engines.
All of these answers are correct, but I do not think they cover the most essential difference. That stems from a combination of all these factors.
The crucial difference between humans and other animal species is that we have the ability to create things that will last through generations to come, whether these things are ideas, knowledge, or physical objects. Things is not a very descriptive word; the proper word, which covers everything we create, is wealth.
Unfortunately, ever since humans started to develop this facility, it has been abused by people who do not want to share, but instead want to accumulate as much wealth as they can for themselves, their families, and friends. That is why there is so much inequality in the world.
In the United Kingdom the richest 100 families own more wealth than the poorest 30% of the population. Five families have the same wealth as the poorest 20% of the population. Worldwide, the 85 wealthiest people have as much wealth as the 3.5 billion poorest people - half the Earth's population.
In recent times we have concerned ourselves with making the world a fairer place by eliminating discrimination in most aspects of our lives. Most people now accept that it is wrong to discriminate against other people by age, disability, race, religion or belief, sex, marital status, or sexual orientation. These views are strengthened by the force of law. Why do we allow the final discrimination, wealth inequality, which is the most pervasive and iniquitous of all, to
