    Paleo Cravings - Dan Thompson

    What is Paleo?

The term Paleo diet is really a misnomer. Paleo is not really meant to be followed for a few weeks to help you lose weight as you might think. Instead it is an eating plan to follow for life, to ensure you are eating in the healthiest way possible. The fact that most people find that they also lose weight, gain energy and just generally feel a lot better is something of an added bonus!

So just what is Paleo? To understand that we have to go back in time a little, well a couple of thousand years actually. You see agriculture and farming as we know it is, in the grand scheme of things a relatively new idea. It really did not even begin to occur to mankind that they could farm rather than hunt until about 10,000 years ago. Before that humans - and we are talking about the proverbial cavemen here - ate only what they could hunt and gather. Over the centuries their bodies adapted to this diet and it became a part of the evolution of humans. Then we started all of this farming stuff.

As efficient and streamlined as agriculture made food production it has introduced all kinds of things that the human body did not evolve around. Wheat, cane sugar, and newer inventions like chemically processed foods, additives and carb loaded snacks. And to those who espouse the Paleo lifestyle it is no surprise that in the modern world obesity is on the rise - meaning that so are weight related diseases like Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol levels. It is no surprise that most people spend half of their time feeling tired and sluggish. Our bodies have still not had time to catch up to the diet shift that would take a few more thousands of years.

There is no such thing anymore as a 'standard' Paleo eating plan. Some people cannot imagine life without dairy and since cavemen did have access to milk include it in their diet while others do not. Some people stick rigidly to the no carb rule while others do have the occasional baked potato (cavemen would not have had them, they are a product of agriculture, although sweet potatoes are not) But whichever 'version' you choose to follow there are some basic rules that apply to all.

    What to Eat?

If you are new to the concept of Paleo eating then one of your biggest questions will be what can I eat and what must I avoid? The list below is a basic primer. Some people choose to follow it rigidly while others may choose to cheat a little with the occasional dairy treat or potato as we mentioned previously. When you begin the Paleo diet however for the best results it really is a good idea
