PUNCTUATION: Red, White & Blue
()
About this ebook
Mickey’s PUNCTUATION - Red, White & Blue helps people around the globe, who write in English, to master an individual “writing style.” As proved in RW&B, style is a matter of preference and consistency because there are many styles in the real world of written communication. Most of them (the important ones) are contained in this smart, professional book.
Style, in most cases, emanates from the writer’s education, character, and personality. RW&B attempts to offer a vision of style by commenting on other important written works, such as educational books, nonfiction books, newspapers, and magazines. Mickey has made an enormous effort to present those styles for your learning benefit. Take advantage of his effort. Learn a style that helps you.
Writing is the classic way of communicating lucid thoughts to those who are willing to read them or to those who must read them. The “willing” readers are parents, spouses, siblings, dear friends, and buyers of what an author publishes. The “must” readers are teachers, professors, business associates, clients, patients, opposing attorneys, co-lawyers, judges, justices, etc. To both readers, a good writer conveys the message clearly and concisely.
RW&B purposely guides a writer (advanced or otherwise) through the maze of rules, conventions, and protocols. Many are the same, many are different. Mickey provides simple explanations (“pictures of writing”) to explain the various writing protocols. Mickey prints contrasting usages (of professors, lawyers, newspapers, and magazines) to teach you how best to use a style. Mickey quotes, reviews, comments, and critiques other author’s writings, as educational tools. Mickey helps a writer learn a proper and precise style. Mickey keeps it short and simple. As you read this book, you feel that Mickey is right there (next to you) teaching, teaching.
Any person who reads Mickey’s punctuation work will eventually establish his or her own “writing style.”

PUNCTUATION - Miguel Suarez
FOREWORD
By Virgilio Perez
The Art of Punctuation
Mickey’s PUNCTUATION - Red, White & Blue (I call it The Art of Punctuation.
) helps people around the globe, who write in English, to master an individual writing style.
As proved in RW&B, style is a matter of preference and consistency because there are many styles in the real world of written communication.
The willing
readers are parents, spouses, siblings, dear friends, and buyers of what an author publishes. The must
readers are teachers, professors, business associates, clients, patients, opposing attorneys, co-lawyers, judges, justices, etc. To both readers, a good writer conveys the message clearly and concisely. So, be short, be honest. Especially, lawyers who must attempt to persuade must not be long winded.
Punctuation marks are the traffic signs
of sentences and of paragraphs. They allow readers to comprehend the author’s ideas and thoughts without having to decipher a complex state of mind. Authors who have difficulty with punctuation marks, such as (i) the problematic comma, (ii) the elegant apostrophe, and (iii) the perturbing hyphen, will not convey an easy to read message or will confuse you (the reader). Readability is compromised when the marks are misused. Mickey, in RW&B, makes a dedicated, educational effort to explain all
the old marks. His worthy examples, following rules and conventions, will enlighten the reader.
RW&B purposely guides a writer (advanced or otherwise) through the maze of rules, conventions, and protocols. Many are the same, many are different. Mickey provides simple explanations (pictures of writing
) to explain the various writing protocols.
Any person who reads Mickey’s punctuation work will eventually establish his or her own writing style.
That is the reason of PUNCTUATION - RW&B.
I say, Mickey, my friend, well done!

Preparation To Write
PUNCTUATION – RED, WHITE & BLUE
• Writing Research
Preparing to write PUNCTUATION - Red, White & Blue (Advanced Version), Dr. Mickey(*) researched professional books, such as (1) The Chicago Manuel Of Style (15th Edition) The University of Chicago Press, Copyright © 1982, 1993, 2003; (2) The Elements of Style, (2d Edition), Strunk and White, The MacMillan Publishing Company (New York), Copyright © 1972 and (4th Edition), Strunk and White, Longman Publishers, Copyright © 2000; (3) The Redbook: A Manual On Legal Style, (2d Reprint), Bryan A. Garner, West Group, Copyright © 2002; (4) Keys for Writing, (2d Edition), Ann Raimes, Houghton Mifflin Company, Copyright © 1979; (5) English Skills, (6th Edition), John Langan, McGraw Hill, Copyright © 1977; (6) Handbook Of Good English, (Original Edition), Edward D. Johnson, Washington Square Press, Copyright © 1983; and (7) Eats, Shoots & Leaves, (1st American Printing), Lynn Truss, Gotham Books, Copyright © 2033. This book (#7) is mainly referred to in EEZZ WRITING – Red, White & Blue (School Version).
(*) Mickey obtained a Doctor of Law
degree in La Habana, Cuba, in 1957, and a Juris Doctor
degree (Cum Laude) in Miami, Florida, in 1964.
In PUNCTUATION - RW&B these seven books are used for educational purposes—tools of learning. When these books are exactly and briefly quoted, by your author, proper and precise attribution is provided. Such quotations, in most instances, are followed by your author’s comments and critiques (see "Dr. Mickey’s Comments" in many chapters).
The Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (Eleventh Edition of 2003) was consistently considered and applied, also, as an educational tool.
• Newspapers, Magazines, Journals
Many publications are quoted in RW&B, such as the New York Times, the Miami Herald, Time, Newsweek, Forbes, The Economist, the Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, etc., to focus the reader on their selected, unique protocols. You will see that they do not follow a similar writing style.
RW&B teaches that journalistic style
should not be used as a writer’s general style.
Alert: Since italics are generously used in this section, quotation marks
are used for better emphasis.
• Lawyers: Black And Spencer
In RW&B, two books written by prominent lawyers are quoted, cited, and highlighted in bold letters.
(1) Black’s Law (Copyright 1999), written by Roy Black, a distinguished Miami criminal defense attorney, is published by Simon & Schuster Inc. Only chapters titled Alvarez
and De La Mata
are considered in RW&B.
(2) O.J. / The Last Word (Copyright 1997), written by Gerry Spence, a legendary Jackson Hole criminal defense attorney, is published by St. Martin’s Press. All chapters of attorney Spence’s book are considered in RW&B.
These two books are used in RW&B for educational purposes and to illustrate different styles. They are quoted and cited to show Dr. Mickey’s readers that writing style is a matter of intellectual, personal choice. Yes, you do have many choices.
• Dr. Mickey’s Writings
Dr. Mickey has authored three books: (1) DR. MICKEY ON ATKINS – The Mijas-Diet, (2) EEZZ WRITING – Red, White & Blue (School Version), and (3) this (Advanced Version).
Dr. Mickey has authored three short works: CHINA: A COUNTRY WITH A SMILE (1980); ELIAN—SON OF THE SEA (2000); and PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH IS BEST FOR AMERICA (2004). The first one was his impression of Communist China, in 1980, where every person, dressed in faded blue, curiously moved about foreign visitors like a massive human wave.
Dr. Mickey was standing on the Great Wall of China when he heard, on a short wave radio, that Governor Ronald Wilson Reagan had been elected President of the USA. The second, a white paper
directed at President Clinton’s government forcible taking of young Elian Gonzalez, in Miami, Florida. This Cuban boy went from an American f-r-e-e-d-o-m land to a hungry, cruel Communist Cuba—a bloody dictatorship. He is now a pawn of the Castro brothers. The third work was his personal and gratuitous effort to answer billionaire George Soros’s blistering, liberal attack on the American president before the 2004 General Election. Dr. Mickey asserted that Soros was wasting his millions on John Kerry’s liberal, confused, and lost cause.
As a Florida lawyer, since 1964, Dr. Mickey has written extensively (namely, demand letters, complaints, motions, interrogatories, request for admissions, jury instructions, memorandums */ of law, appellate briefs, wills, trusts, etc.). */ Webster’s, Chicago, and The Redbook permit either memoranda
or memorandums.

Afterword
1 // PUNCTUATION – RED, WHITE & BLUE
This is a punctuation book.
• What is writing?
Writing is a mystery of the mind.
Writing is the communication of ideas.
Writing is a deliberate process.
Writing is slow, troublesome, and complex.
Writing is review, review, and review.
Writing is reduce, reduce, and reduce.
Writing is dedication—total dedication.
• Advanced Version
This book is for writers of all ages who wish to reach perfection.
This book is for high school students, college students, and advanced writers who wish to develop or wish to perfect a profound and powerful literary writing style for high school and college papers, legal papers, articles, essays, white papers, short stories, reports, memoranda/memorandums, newsletters, proposals, journals, eBooks, books, letters, emails, etc. But keep in mind that most writings (especially books) are not always perfect.
• Writing Your Papers
(I use a * before highlighted words and phrases.)
How should you write your papers?
Is there just *one correct writing style?
There are many correct styles. For example, Writers use either *Gladys’s shares or *Gladys’ shares—depends on the protocol being used by the writer.
Alert: Do not use both styles in one paper.
I prefer to use *Gladys’s shares. More later on the tall, beautiful apostrophe (’).
• Your Future
Writing is in your future: for impressing others, for communication, for persuasion, for comment, for respectful critique, and for success (for making money; pl. moneys). What intellectual image will you project in the real world[] if your writings lack style (if they are mis[]punctuated)? (Is a *, required after *world?) (Should there be a (-) in *mis[]punctuated?) In the real world, whatever is your destiny, every word you use to structure a grammatically correct sentence or paragraph and their punctuation will vividly reflect your craftsmanship.
• Personal Preference And Consistency
Once you have completed reading and studying this book, you will come to the conclusion that writing style is a matter of personal preference and of consistency. Compare Black’s Law to O.J. / The Last Word. In this text, both books will be highlighted in bold and italics. So[,] (with or without a comma) you will have to make sound, stable selections and consistently apply them in your good works.
Will you write *from the $600s or *from the $600’s? Will you use the *serial comma (aka the Oxford comma)?
Will you chop the (hated by me) *hyphen?
• RW&B Helps You Three Ways
RW&B helps you to use a smart style.
RW&B helps you to use proper punctuation.
RW&B helps you to be consistent.
