SECTION I
This book is a living tool. It’s designed with you and your daily life in mind. It’s a kitchen counter book—not a coffee table book.
Keep it on the kitchen counter, and flip through it during the day as a constant reminder of your goal of living in ultimate health. When you reach for something in the refrigerator, prepare a meal, or entertain a guest at the counter, your health manual for life will be at your fingertips. This book is intentionally basic and designed for simplicity. Each chapter offers simple yet life-saving tools for living, some of which you may have heard before, but overlooked. We have collaborated on this book for you, to remind you that it’s never too late to live younger, stronger, and longer.
CHAPTER 1
LIFESTYLE
How are you living your life? Are you balanced or unbalanced? Do you feel stressed or at peace? Do you manage risks, get enough rest, and say no when you need to? All of these lifestyle factors combined, along with nutrition and regular exercise, contribute to a positive outcome. Are your daily habits supporting a healthy life?
How you live your life each day determines how long and how healthy it will be. Your longevity and youth are in your hands, not in your DNA, as most people believe. Your youthful look, skin, muscle tone, and internal organ function is primarily the result of the choices you make each and every day. A fit, healthy, and nutrient- and exercise-rich lifestyle leads to an outcome of abundant energy, vitality, and youth! This is the truth, and we hope to help you live it by making you more aware of the things you can do to lengthen and strengthen your life.
Successful people are self-aware. The questions and statements at the beginning of every chapter are designed to help you recalibrate and understand where you are—in order to know where you need to be.
How healthy are you?
Not just physically, but also emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and in all quadrants of your life. Ultimate Health means having complete clarity about the life you want and taking the preventive and proactive measures required in order to live it.
What does being the best, the strongest, and the healthiest mean to you? Does it mean achieving a lower cholesterol level, exercising three times a week, or incorporating more antioxidants into your diet? Or maybe you have set a goal to spend more time with yourself, perhaps writing or meditating on your goals. The two are more closely related than you think. You need a balanced mental and physical approach to your health to truly be at your best.
Throughout this book you will see the term ultimate health
many times: not just health—ultimate health. We all joined together to write this book because we share the same passion: to live in Ultimate Health and educate others about how they can transform their lives and do the same.
Ultimate Health means having complete clarity about the life you want and taking the preventive and proactive measures required in order to live it.
LIVING TEN YEARS YOUNGER
Sometimes all it takes to look and feel younger is changing one or two habits in your life. Chances are you know someone who has lost twenty pounds or more and transformed their body. If you have ever witnessed that, you’ve seen how a reduction in excess body fat can make someone look younger! The same goes for people who smoke. Smoking can make the skin appear dry, wrinkled, and much older than it actually is. Eliminating one bad habit can turn back time.
And here’s why it’s important.
No one knows how long they’re going to live. Any of us could live to be 80, or for decades more. But the key to long life isn’t just existing, it is living a quality life! A life where you can be active and have a passion, curiosity, desire to learn, and joy about your life until your last day.
The United States government predicts that by the year 2050 there will be over half a million centenarians. Hard to imagine! Nearly half a million people living to 100! That means that if you are 70, you could live to be one 100. It is possible. The question becomes, then, what kind of life will it be? Are you doing what you can to thrive and increase your longevity?
Many people suffer with diseases that could have been prevented by simply living a better life! Diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and depression. (Yes, even depression!) Thinking about your daily habits and decisions now can prevent deficiencies in lifestyle later.
No matter where you live, what you do for a living, or who you are, your health is up to you. You are responsible for your body and how healthy it is.
QUALITY OF LIFE
In these pages we want to offer you tangible solutions to living a healthier life. If being one of the world’s half a million centenarians is your goal, we will offer you steps to achieve it. If taking better care of yourself and living in Ultimate Health is important to you, we can offer guidelines to make that become a reality.
Together, we’ve collectively coached thousands of people to live their very best lives—and in the pages to follow, we want to coach you to do the same. The steps to Ultimate Health aren’t complex. It’s about developing the daily habits that work for you and your body; and keeping your mind, body, and emotional life operating at the highest level of excellence.
YOUR REAL AGE
Ultimate Health includes managing the way you age. In the pages to follow we are going to challenge you to think differently about your current age as well as provide strategies for how to improve the quality of your years. This is about more than just your chronological age. We believe there are at least three types of aging: chronological, mental, and physical. You can’t stop the first one but you can take steps today to positively alter the physical and mental aging process. Chronological: this is your biological age. Mental: how young you think and feel. Physical: this is the level of activity you’re able to participate in, your energy level, and how well your body is working.
Do you feel stressed, overloaded, sluggish, or overweight? Are you lacking sleep, hormones, or nutrients that properly fuel your brain and body and support your immune system? If you do, it’s time to pay attention to the warning signs.
Research has proven that you can positively influence your
