    Basic Sewing Supplies & Tools

Below is a list of suggested basic sewing tools and supplies you will need to successfully complete the lessons in this book.

    SEWING MACHINE

A sewing machine that stitches the basic straight stitches, a zigzag stitch and a three-step zigzag stitch is recommended.

    FABRIC

Each pattern lists the fabrics needed to complete the project. Cotton or a cotton/polyester blend fabric is recommended. Other fabrics may require special treatment and are not recommended for a beginner.

    THREAD

All-purpose thread to match or blend with the fabrics used in the project works best. The stitches will blend in with the fabrics and will hide seams that are not perfect.

    CUTTING TOOLS

Sharp scissors may be used to trim threads, while sharp shears are used to cut fabrics.

A rotary cutter and a self-healing mat are good tools to have when cutting wide, long strips. A rotary cutter is a dangerous tool and safety is important when using. Adult supervision is required.

    IRON

A steam iron is preferred. Most projects require ironing throughout the construction process, so the iron should be set up close to the sewing machine.

    STRAIGHT PINS & PINCUSHION

Use straight pins wherever the instructions refer to pinning layers together. Store pins in a pincushion when not in use.

    MEASURING TOOLS

Use a 12-inch or longer ruler for measuring long distances and a 6-inch sewing gauge for measuring short distances.

A 6 x 24-inch ruler is helpful when cutting long strips from one finished edge (selvage) of the fabric to another.

    MARKING PENS

An erasable fabric marker may be used for most of the projects in this book. A lead pencil will work in some cases, but you must be sure that the marks will not show on the final project. Tailor’s chalk is another option.

    SEAM SEALANT

A seam sealant helps to keep seams or thread ends from fraying or coming undone. It is recommended for at least one project in this book.

    HAND-SEWING NEEDLES & THIMBLE

Hand-sewing needles are used in this book to sew buttons or other decorative items to projects. When using a hand-sewing needle, it helps to wear a thimble on the middle finger of the hand used to hold the needle. The thimble helps to push the needle through the fabric, especially when there are many layers.
