    Mindset of the Masters

Can it really be true that our thoughts are things? We can take a look around us and see the verifiable evidence of this statement in all of the ingenious items, tools, artwork, musical masterpieces, and inventions we utilize on a daily basis that make our lives a bit more comfortable. It is in the name of human comfort that much of the innovation of the past has been brought forth, by creativity, and made manifest by those who decided to pursue their passion. Take a look around you this very moment and you’ll see the materialization of many physical items that were once a mere concept in the mind of an inventive soul somewhere who thought of a better way. Everything from the bookshelf to the doorknob to the automatic sifting cat litter box, all the way up to the complex computer networks we now use to share downloadable information packages. All of these were once a mere shadow of an idea in the mind of some noble inventor who decided to actually follow through with bringing their idea to the masses in the form of a useful product for sale. In medieval times, while oil lit lanterns flickered in the cold corridors, hot water had to be boiled over an open flame and added to a tub of cold water in order to create a warm bath for a newborn. The Romans also used a similar method to heat the baths, but it was not until 1889, when Edmund Rudd improved upon the idea of Benjamin Waddy Maughn’s invention, that we get something like the commercial versions we have in modern American homes today. Now we have the ability to simply adjust the hot nozzle a little bit and enjoy the luxurious experience of the ideal temperature as we wash the dirt and stress of the day from our tired, worn out bodies. I praise this ingenuity each and every time I take a shower, and until you’ve been to a region of the planet where hot water doesn’t exist, it’s hard to understand what a truly brilliant invention this is.

All of our creature comforts that we often take for granted were once a mere phantom floating about in the invisible fabric of the ether. A concept is then brought into material existence by some motivated soul who decides one day to follow through with the necessary steps required to make that idea a reality. It’s important that we recognize that this is a distinguishing trait of all the many innovators and thought leaders that have enhanced the lives of the many, and they’ve profited immensely for their tireless efforts. Amazingly, it was often, initially, very difficult for these great leaders of innovation to gain support for their concepts, and many of these triumphant pioneers initially faced a high degree of ridicule and rejection for their brilliant concepts.

If history has taught us anything, it’s that the evolution of the collective consciousness has sometimes moved slowly, like dripping molasses, through the sands of time. It’s often the visionaries & sages, who exist in another dimension light years ahead of the popular vote, who make bold claims and then wait patiently for humanity to catch up. These are the artists that continue to envision a more prosperous existence for all. It’s interesting to think that a lot of the ideas that Leonardo Da Vinci had during his lifetime, such as being a vegetarian, were considered heresy at time. It was Albert Einstein who reminded us that many of these great minds encountered violent opposition when they initially tried to share their vision with the world. We all have this charged potential, brewing deep inside of us, yet it is the rare few who make the decision to follow through with their dreams and who actually take the essential steps towards bringing their vision to fruition. I also believe that not everyone is born into a circumstance where their highest potential is nurtured, and sadly, that potential doesn’t ever get to see the light of day. It is my deepest hope that the information contained in these illuminated pages provides a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration for those who feel that they are ready to tap into their true potential and find their higher calling in life. It has been written that there is a powerful and unique gift that lies inside every person, waiting to be shared with the world. When this gift is shared, we all benefit from it and the planet as a whole becomes a better place. Let this book serve as a reminder of the many tools of empowerment that have been passed down to us through the ages, those who have handed us the torches through all of the love lit pages of the classics. Essentially, those who were passionate enough about bringing their truth to the world are the ones who have had the biggest impact throughout time. As you continue to read this, you will begin to tune into your higher calling, and then it is my hope that you will share your gift with us all. You’ll begin to see the practicality of concepts like the law of attraction, auto-suggestion, and the matrix of manifestation. Remember that every thought in the mind is the seed of great potential, and if we nurture and follow through with those ideas that serve the greatest number of people, we will begin to understand what the monks of Tibet were talking about when they spoke of good karma. Though the dawn of the information age, the reciprocal exchange of knowledge, wisdom, and value is rewarded greatly, and those who choose to empower others with their knowledge will prosper in more ways than one. Each unique idea is like a giant sunflower, containing thousands of other seeds, which contain the blueprint and design for future seedlings to sprout and to grow upwards towards the mighty sun. However, it doesn’t require an analogy for us to see how thoughts really are things when we act upon them and assign a clear plan of action. You do have the power to decide what your true path will be by providing the world with a valuable uplifting message or by demonstrating a useful skill. The doorway to success is right in front of you, and you now hold the key to living out the most meaningful life possible for you and all those that you impact with your message.

    The Power of Visualization

I recall my father teaching me about the power of visualization when I was probably about the age of seven. We had this old iron weight set that we had carried from house to house as my father chased his engineering career from town to town. It didn’t matter how far away our destination was, that weight set was coming with us, because fitness was a priority for him. In his younger years, he was one of those stocky, muscle bound weight lifters that could dead lift 500+ pounds of iron over his head as the veins of sheer determination bulged out of the side of his sweat drenched cranium. I recall him teaching me that all Olympic athletes utilized a technique called visualization, wherein they would imagine themselves going through the motions before they actually performed the goal at hand. Through visualization, they would imagine themselves over and over again accomplishing whatever feat it was that they wanted to attain. So this means that before Javier Sotomayor set the world record for the high jump 2.45 (8 ft 1/4in) in 1993, he likely imagined himself doing it over and over again in his mind successfully. The idea, combined with the mental practice, in conjunction with sheer determination and training, eventually allowed him to break this previously unattainable height, sought out only by the most grasshopper like men. When we hold the image of what we’d like to happen in our lives with conviction, something miraculous happens in the inner workings of the subconscious. The clearer and more specific we are with what it is we want to unfold in our lives, the better the outcome. Whether it’s building a better drum or serving people with the gift of information in the form of a book or podcast, once we hold that vision in our minds and we come up with a plan for fulfilling that vision, we have the set the stage. The cosmic architect begins to put the electro-magnetic gears of creation into motion, and we begin the powerful process of translating our dreams into the physical universe. Perplexing as it may seem, the invisible hand of creation begins to interact & synchronize with the physical particles of the known and unknown universe. The dance of synchronicity and serendipity begins as thought waves unfold like flower petals into the vast expanse, and the many waves of emotional intent ripple out in all direction, communicating with the divine master of the universe. Once the conductor waves his wand, the orchestration of the particles is initiated. The more we combine faith with concentration, the more we begin to actualize our intentions. The more we refine our technique and practice the skill required to bring that idea into existence, the more success we yield in a practical sense. It’s all fine and well to have the dream of achieving your first book, but nothing will happen if you don’t sit down and start writing your first page. Only through repetition and practice can you really become good at something. Of course there will be certain skills you have a knack for, but unless you initiate the process first, how will you ever know?

From the time I was 11 years old, I became obsessed with snowboarding. Part of this was probably due to the fact that I grew up in Ogden City, Utah, which was located right at the foothills of Snowbasin, which would later become the site for the Olympic Downhill in 2002. When my father first began to take us there in the late 80’s, he would always tell me stories on the lift ride up. Back then, there weren’t any fancy high speed gondola lifts like there are today. It wasn’t much more than a steel swing with a padded wooden plank for a seat. As we were being carried up the shimmering snow covered mountain, my father would always tell me how lucky we were to be able to ride the lift for such a great price. At the time, it only cost me 12 dollars to get lift tickets with my season discount pass that I had purchased at the beginning of the ski season. This is one of the last great secrets son, he would tell me with a smile. There were only about three or four lifts at the time, and it would take a good 15-20 minutes of steady climb to make it to the top. Little did we know at the time that the place would someday be the site where Bernhard Russi would design the Grizzly downhill course for the 2002 Winter Olympics. It would then earn the reputation as being the Kitzbuhel of North America, a reference to the Hahnenkamm downhill located in Kitzbuhel, Austria, which is known to be the fastest and most treacherous in the world. If you’ve ever watched the footage of this event, you can actually see the athletes visualizing their run as they prepare to make their death defying descent. You’ll notice those involved in ski aerial acrobatics do the same thing just before they initiate their amazing stunts, which sometimes involve quadruple twisting triples! This is a prime example of what humans can achieve with sheer determination, practice, and faith. The decision these extraordinary people made to pursue these seemingly inhuman feats is something that has always fascinated me. In no other circumstance is the power of visualization more apparent.

This sort of thing inspired me and so several years later, I utilized the power of visualization before I attempted my one and only double backflip on a snowboard off of a 20 foot windblown cornice at the top of Middle Bowl lift. I stood ready at the very peak of the ski resort, just beneath a 50 foot cliff, looking down at the famous middle bowl cornice, which was only accessible during certain times of the year. It was a picture perfect hit and this would be my chance to attempt the almighty double back flip on a snowboard. Never before had I ever been so nervous, yet simultaneously focused as I was in that moment. I stared down at this momentous opportunity that I had been preparing for my entire life, and I began to imagine myself successfully completing one rotation and then holding the tuck for another. My friend Chris was standing to the side of the lip, waiting for me to go for it, probably hoping he wasn’t going to have to run for the ski patrol if something went wrong. So I dropped in on the 45% slope and went for it. The sound of the wind blowing past my goggles increased in volume the faster I went. As I approached the top of the lip I wound up for the flip and wippy woosh….I made the first rotation, then the centripetal force forced me to come out of my tuck a bit too early. It didn’t matter, I was high enough up that I continued to rotate and made the second rotation no problem. In fact, I over rotated and couched it, bounced right up and was totally happy with how it ended up, even though I didn’t quite land it perfectly. I rode out of it alive and never tried another one again. The point of this story is that thanks to visualization, I had pulled a double back flip on my snowboard and lived to tell the tale. Not that impressive considering what the professionals are doing these days, but it’s one experience I’ve had using the concept of visualization.

Another example of this concept can be illustrated by a story about a goal I set for myself and achieved back in middle school. I recall being in sixth grade and hacky sack became all the rage. A small group of us would circle up in the hall and tell jokes while we kicked a little fabric bag filled with beads back and forth to each other. At first it was just about having a little fun, but being the goal oriented person that I was raised to be, I decided to see if I could establish some sort of record. I recall setting the goal of having the greatest number of hacks in a row. That just meant I was able to keep the hacky sack in the air with my feet without using my hands in any way. Every day I’d practice for hours, serving the hacky sack to myself with the intent of breaking the school record, which at the time was only about twenty kicks in a row. Well one day, after obsessively focusing on the simple skill of keeping it up, I was able to crush the record. I was able to get to about 256 hacks in a row. I believe that I probably still hold the record at that school because I set the intention and worked diligently on achieving that goal day in and day out. It was through the continuous process of setting goals & attempting these little experiments that my journey towards manifestation began, and I started to realize that there really was no secret to success, other than sheer determination and repetition. Same goes for developing your skills as a professional writer. The only real way to become a proficient writer is to sit down and start doing it a lot. That’s it! Same with becoming a great painter or singer. Now of course, some people have a knack for these things, and that’s just the way it goes. Nonetheless, I still firmly believe that this is the real secret that they sometimes forget to mention in some of these law of attraction books. It’s not just asking for things to happen in
