    Prologue

Monday December 10, 2012, San Antonio Hospital

Blistering sharpness of rugged terrain beats Maria Michaels’ body causing excruciating pain, as she tumbles down the steep incline kicking and shoving. Her mind is in turmoil while sinking deeper and deeper into a dark hole as her entire world disappeared. This dream continued.

Marla Michael’s eyes open to complete darkness. Her body feels as if smashed into a dark tunnel. Trying to pull her hands up to feel her body--cannot. Her heart pounds, realizing her hands are bound to the side of the bed, with a heavy contraption holding her down. Yelling--no sounds come, prevented by a cover of musty smelling apparatus. She tries to kick her legs--nothing.

Her weary eyes mists as she, peers around the dark gloomy area. Where am I? Where’s Paul? What’s happening? Am I in jail? Oh, no, what if this is hell?

Squeak, squeak; she freezes. No, no, he’s back! Her head throbs as fear seizes her again of that horrible man up top of her.

Her brow, wrinkled from age dampens with sweat. I won’t be able to get away from him this time. I can’t even yell for help God if you’re out there please help me. Suddenly beams lighten the dark tunnel. Marla visualizes a white silhouette gliding toward her lifting the mask from her face and freeing her hands from its shackles.

Her eyes dart around the room. Relief. White shadow, good, She reaches her hand out to the silhouette and a musical voice vibrates from the vision, as their hands touch, You’re safe here.

The musical voice and soft touch makes her feel safe and secure. At least I'm not in hell. Then the realization, Oh no, those horrible men robbed me of my Paul

    December 10thHouston, Texas

The loud shrill of his cell phone hitting his ears. Jerked Ted Michael awake from a sound sleep. Fumbling for his cell, he stole a look at the clock. It is digital numbers glowed red three o’clock! Although uncommon for Ted to receive calls in the middle of the night for his PT business, an unshakeable feeling tightened his gut. This call was sad news. Sweat rolled down his face, as he opened his phone and squeaked, Ted Williams, Private Investigator

We have your dad; bring one-hundred dollars to the Budget Motel Highway 10 by midnight tonight or her dies!"

Ted's heart pounded as he wiped the sweat from his brow and commanded through clinched teeth. What? Let me talk to my dad, I need proof.

A weak squeaky voice heard, Please help us! Find your mom. I'm in a rat-infested room at---

Suddenly his voice stopped, and struggle heard, and a gruff voice of the gang member came back, Get the money and bring to Budget Motel, and check into room 200 by midnight tonight, or else your dad will be dead.

Ted recognized the strain in his dad's voice and knew he was in terrible danger. His head spun as he bolted out of bed. Need a plan to get him out of whatever hellhole they held him prisoner.

Ted dialed 911; voice rose "My dad, Paul Michael has been kidnapped. Mom Marla Michael, who is missing, was with him. The kidnappers are demanding a hundred- thousand dollars. What do we do?

We'll check it out and send out APB for your mom and give you a call when we have information," A Police detective said with compassion.

After talking with the police, Ted stumbled into the bathroom. Glimpsing in the mirror his coal black hair stood straight up scared, just like he felt. Puffy bags already appeared under his deep brown troubled eyes, as sweat flowed through down his shadowed face. Splashing water on his face perked up his mind. He made motel reservations, and then called brother, Joe, who lived in Houston. Placing the phone on speaker, he pulled jeans over his muscular body, all the time thinking how to get money for the ransom. Please God help.

While on speaker, he dialed his brother, and a sleepy voice came on, Hello, who is this?

Ted choked out, Hey, Dad's been kidnapped. The gang is demanding a large ransom by midnight tonight.

Oh, that's terrible. What happened-where-when? Joe stuttered.

    Ted explained everything he knew.

Wow! We need to do something right away. Do you have a plan?]

Going to the Budget Motel tonight and try to get dad back. Sure, could use your help. I've made reservations at the Day's Inn in San Antonio and plan to leave here, shortly. If you can be ready, I'll pick you up in half an hour.

Wow, that quick, okay, I'll be ready. But where can we get that much money?

I have a plan. Will explain more later, on the way.

Okay, I'll tell Mary to call the rest of the family in Minnesota and be ready when you get here. Am anxious to hear your plan.

Good see you in few minutes. As Joe was rambling around packing, he woke up his wife, Mary. Rubbing her eyes she asked, What's going on?

Joe placed his arms around his wife and explained Ted's call. Ted picking me up in a few minutes and heading for San Antonio. We'll be staying at the Day's Inn there. Call the rest of the brothers and tell them. If any can come, tell them to call Ted's cell. We can use their help. I'll leave the van here to pick any who plan to come.

Drive carefully and let me know what you find out, Mary said with a tear showing in her eyes. Just then Ted pulled into his driveway, Joe threw his bag into Ted's pickup and the two headed for San Antonio.

While on the road, Joe asked, Well, what help do you think we can get from the police?

They'll call us when they hear anything about Mom. I sure hope it won't be sad news.

I just wish they could help with the ransom, Joe said sadly.

    Yeah, right.

While driving the 150 miles in silence, Joe eyes misted. I sure hope Mom is all right. I wonder where she is if she's even still alive.

Ted, single, the youngest of the Michael brothers worked as a private detective in Houston. He was usually energetic and always ready for action when it came to helping those who were in danger. However, when it came to his family his mind twirled. What should I do first? I need to call the police and my brothers. Lord, we need your help.

He jumped out of bed, peered in the mirror, and noticed the dark bags below his deep brown troubled eyes. His dark almost black hair stood straight up-scared-just like his heart felt. Sweat rolled down though his mustache. After splashing water over his eyes and face, he was able to see to dial the police.

Mind made up. After talking with the police, he will call his brother, Joe, a contractor, a year older and wiser, married and lives a couple miles from him in Houston.

His hand shaking, he dialed the police in San Antonio.

San Antonio police department, Detective Albright, here, can we help you?

Ted’s voice squeaked as he shouted into the phone. We need help. A gang kidnapped my-my dad and are demanding huge amount of money in twenty-four hours, or they’ll kill him. What should I do?

Try to calm down. What is your dad’s name?

Paul Michaels. I’m so frightened. My mom was with him when the gang abducted them, and is missing. Could you check the hospitals for a Marla Michaels? We’re worried that she may be lying dead somewhere. Ted pounded his fists together, as tears streamed his face

I’ll put out an alert for your mom and we’ll find her. It’s a good thing she’s not with your dad. We usually don’t like to give into these men’s demands by giving them money.

What-what do you mean? How in the world can we get our dad back? I’m calling my brothers. The gang may kill our dad if we don’t bring one-hundred-thousand dollars to the Budget Motel in San Antonio. They’re sending a gang member to collect it by midnight tonight. However-but if you won’t help us, we’ll take matters in our own hands. As a private detective, I won’t let anything happen to my parents! We’re going to the meeting at the Budget Inn tonight. We may need some help. Ted pleaded. His heart fluttering and his head spun as he rattled on with anger.

A pause—then a hint of sympathy heard, as the Detective said, I’ll have someone contact you in San Antonio. Go to the meeting tonight, if you feel you must, but be very careful, these men are dangerous. We’ll be around to help where we can. Where will you be staying while here in San Antonio?

I’ll be at the Days Inn in San Antonio waiting for my other brothers. Hopeful my brother who lives here in Houston will be coming along. If so, we’ll be leaving soon from Houston, and be there in about three hours.

Ted turned his phone off, after talking with the police; he dialed his Brother Joe’s cell. I need to talk with someone who understands. Joe always knows what to do. Oh, Lord please let him come with me.

After several rings, his brother’s sleepy voice came to the phone. Hello, who is this?

Ted head was twirling, with anger, tears continued to dampen his face making his voice squeak. Joe, I just got a call from Dad, and he’s been kidnapped by a Mexican gang near San Antonio. They want us to bring a hundred-thousand-dollars to a motel in San Antonio by midnight tonight. Worse yet, Mom is missing. I’m worried. I called the San Antonio Police Department. The detective I talked to said that they usually don’t give these gang members money. I don’t know how else we’ll get Dad back. I told the detective that I’m going to meet with the gang member tonight and don’t know how much help they will give me He did say he’d put an alert out for Mom and he’ll contact us if he hears anything. I’m heading to San Antonio in a few minutes and made a reservation for the Days Inn in San Antonio. Please come along I need your help to get our dad back, one way, or another. Ted hands shook as he grabbed a bag and shoving clothes in it, while talking to Joe.

Oh, my Lord, How can they not help? Okay, I’ll ask Mary to call the rest of the family and pick you up at your place in ten minutes. We’ll figure this out, somehow. God please help. Joe prayed aloud as he grabbed his clothes, throwing them into a bag, waking his wife.\

Mary rubbed sleep from her eyes. What’s going on? It’s only three in the morning. Seeing her husband’s tears and anger, she knew something terrible had happened. Placing her arms around him, she asked gently, What’s wrong?

Joe told her about Ted’s call. His hands shook as he handed her his brother’s phone numbers and asked, Would you call the rest of the brothers and tell them I’m picking Ted up in a few minutes and heading for San Antonio. We’ll be staying at the Days Inn downtown San Antonio. He kissed her good-by, jumped into his truck, and headed for Ted’s apartment.

After Joe left, Mary called Brett’s’ home in Minnesota to let them know what was happening.

When Brett’s phone shrilled, he shot up in his bed. He checked the lit clock as the moon shone through the frosted window. Oh wow, it’s only three thirty, who in the world could be calling, this early? His heart pounded in fear of sad news as the white of the newly fallen snow made him shiver. Brett, the oldest of the Michaels brothers, sprang out of bed and grabbed a warm robe His hands trembled as he fumbled for his cell phone and answered. Hello, who is calling this early?

Brett, this is Mary Joe asked me to call you. I have sad news. Your mom and dad were apparently hi-jacked by a Mexican gang and your dad held for ransom near San Antonio. We’re not sure where your mom is. Ted called the police in San Antonio and Joe and Ted are heading there right now. They’ll be staying at the Days Inn in downtown San Antonio. If you can get a flight to Houston, I’ll pick you up at the airport and drive you there. We’re about three hours from San Antonio.

Brett eyes misted as he combed his shaking hands through his wavy hair. Oh no, that’s terrible. I’ll call Bart and Greg and we’ll get a flight out as soon as we can and let you know when we’ll be there. Thanks for letting us know. His hands still shaking as he opened his computer as his engineer mind went to full gear looking for the next flight to San Antonio or Houston. Tears on the brim, he prayed aloud, his voice trembling, Please Lord help Dad and Mom and help us to get a flight right away. How did Dad sound when Ted talked with him?

He said that he was in a smelly rat-infected place and sounded weak but said he wasn’t treated too badly. He’s more worried about Mom.

"That doesn’t sound good. We’ll come as soon as we can. Hope we’ll be able to help get Dad away from this gang when we get there.

Brett’s wife Sally woke and wiping over her eyes, asked, What’s going on? It’s only three in the morning. Who just called?

Brett tears came to the surface as he explained to her what Mary told him. She took Brett in her arms and said, "Oh, I’m so sorry. What’s your plan?’

First, I must notify the rest of the family. I am checking the computer now to find out the next flight to Houston or San Antonio, whichever leaves the soonest, OK, here is a flight leaving for Houston at seven this morning. Do you think you could throw a few clothes in a bag for me, while I call Bart and Greg? I will order three e-tickets for the Houston flight, hoping they both will be able to leave with me. I would love you to come, but I know it is too late a notice for you to get someone to stay with the children. I will keep in contact. I’d really like you drive us to the airport, though.

For sure, I wish there was more I could do to help you get through this terrible situation.

Just take care of the family and I’ll let you know when we find out what’s going on. I’m really worried about Mom no one seems to know where she is, or if she’s even alive. Sally held him tight as tears fell both faces.

Greg was a year younger and single, and built as if he could take anyone down. When Greg’s phone chirped, it alarmed him. Rubbing his eyes, he peered at the lighted time and number on his phone. Noticing Brett’s name, he bit his lower lip. Brett has never called this early. It had to mean something serious was happening. When he opened the phone he stammered, "Hi Brett, what’s happening?

Brett’s voice cracked. Mary, Joe’s wife called. A gang kidnapped Dad near San Antonio and we do not know where Mom is. They want one-hundred thousand dollars ransom for dad. I’m scared and plan to leave on the next flight to Houston at seven this morning. If you want to come along, Sally and I will pick you up at five-thirty.

Shocked, Greg’s voice stammered, That’s horrible. His mind started to think of what he had to do first. Being the manager of his own business, he needed to let his company know he would be gone for a while. I’ll be ready when you get here. Was Ted able to talk with Dad? How was he holding up?

He told Ted that he wasn’t in too bad of shape, there are not giving him much to eat, and he is living with a bunch of prisoner, men and woman crammed in a horrible smelling rat-infested place. He’s more worried about Mom, though. I am too. I’m calling Bart now and have him meet at Forest Lake before we pick you up. It’d be a clever idea to bring carry-on-bags.

"I’ll be waiting. Our parents need us now. I
