Hello,So you want to know a little bit about me? Well, if you don't then stop reading. Otherwise, here you go. I was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and enjoyed spending my early years in Karns with multiple travels to Middle and West Tennessee. As an adult, I've found myself based in South Florida, dodging daily rain showers and watching the bamboo grow. Although I'm from Knoxville (Go Vols), I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Florida (Go Gators) with highest honors in photography. Safe to say, the creative process has held my attention both before college and well after.Books have particularly held an interest for me. For many years, I did custom book binding and on occasion I'll break out the tools to prepare a gift or make a journal for myself. It wasn't until recently I decided to take a dip into the world of self publishing. The drive to self publish came from my desire to share what I've learned with my "day job". I have been providing web development and consulting services for small businesses for over a decade now. It was time to put some organized thoughts on paper for my clients and anyone else interested in getting a website up and running. My first foray into self publishing was so enjoyable that I've already started developing ideas for more books (unrelated to websites). If you've traveled this road before, I'd love to hear your stories. You can always find me on the interwebs or at mitchadams.com.Take care and don't take any wooden nickels.Mitch

    Target Audience

This book is meant for the non-technical small business owner who wants to set up an online presence for their business. Although there are references to technical concepts, this book is not a technical step by step guide for building a website. The principles outlined will help the small business owner navigate through the overall process of getting a website online. After reading this book, the small business owner will have a base understanding of concepts they can use to help them grow and protect their business and online presence.

    Chapter One: Getting Started

First off, relax. Remember, a project is made up of many tasks with each task undertaken in a sequence. An entire project is not completed in one fell swoop.

If you are reading this book, you already understand the importance of having a solid web presence for your business. The purpose of this book is to help you get organized going forward. It will highlight areas you want to pay attention to in order to prevent trouble down the road. At the end of the process, you should feel informed and secure about all aspects of your company’s online presence.

Although this book is not a technical guide, I will include some terms and concepts used by designers and developers. This vocabulary is included so you can become accustomed to the language of the Web. Where applicable, I will point you to resources where you can further your education on the topic being outlined. A list of common terms you might run across is at the end of the book. Spend some time going through the terms every now and again so you can become familiar with them.

As you progress through this book, always keep your customer and target audience in mind. The choices you make should be of benefit to the customer first. You want a well-rounded, useful web presence to reinforce your service or product with both your existing and potential customers.

    Research

The first step you will take in getting your website up and running will be to see what other companies are doing (or are not doing) with their own web presence. Your research is going to consist primarily of visiting other websites and developing a vision of what your own website will feature. The research doesn’t have to be difficult or time consuming. As you browse companies online doing similar work, or companies you find interesting, look at their websites through the eyes of your business. What do you like? What could you do without? Over time, you will start to formulate a rough idea for your own website. Your vision will include how your site looks, what it contains, how it should
