      Let me tell you a story about Joseph II., Emperor of Austria. Joseph tried to be a kind man. He liked to do things for people when he could.

      One day he dressed up as a private person, not as a king. The kings of old would do this. Since there was no television and no way to print pictures, many people were not sure of what their kings and emperors looked like.

      Also in these days, kings and emperors were very important people. Many people thought of them as different from most common people. They also thought of people who were poor or had to beg as different. They thought they weren't as good as those who worked.

      On this day, Emperor Joseph went out for a walk through the streets of Vienna. There he saw a boy about twelve years old. The boy came up
