    Chapter One: Introduction

    The Sound of Waves by Yukio Mishima was first published in 1954. Shinji is the protagonist of the novel.

    It is a coming-of-age novel that describes Shinji’s development into a mature person and his romance with Hatsue who happens to be the daughter of a rich ship owner Terukichi.

    Shinchosha Publishing awarded the Shincho Prize to the author for The Sound of Waves in the year of its publication. The book has been made into movie at five different times.

    It is said that the author had visited Greece to study its culture. He is said to have appreciated the harmonious balance between intellect and flesh evinced by the Greeks. The Sound of Waves presents the aura of gentle affection and endearing innocence.

    When the book was first published, most of the reviews were quite positive. Edmund Fuller, writing for the New York Times, said that, The colorful setting is an enchantment, but the basic appeal is universal. The novel is altogether a joyous and lovely thing.

    Likewise, admiring the novel, The San Francisco Chronicle said that the novel was of such classic design that its action might take place at any point across a thousand years. There were hundreds of such wonderful reviews. Both scholars and common readers admired the skill of the author.

    The book was an instant success and it sold very well both in Japanese and in English.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

    Shinji Kubo, the protagonist of the story, lives with his mother. He happens to be a pearl diver. Hiroshi is his younger brother.

    His mother and Shinji earn the livelihood to provide for the family. Shinji’s father had died in the Second World War. His fishing boat had been strafed by an American bomber.

    The family has a peaceful existence. Shinji is satisfied with his work as a fisherman and pearl diver. He works for Jukichi Oyama, his master. There is another apprentice named Ryuji.

    After the death of his son, Terukichi Miyata brings his adopted daughter and raises her as a pearl diver. He brings her from another island. She becomes a very beautiful girl. Her name is Hatsue. She gets many admirers and Shinji is one of them.

    Rich Terukichi Miyata wants to adopt the man who marries Hatsue as his own son. Now the prospects of marrying Hatsue are more attractive. Shinji and Hatsue fall in love.

    Chiyoko happens to be the daughter of the Lighthouse-keeper and his wife. She had been studying in Tokyo. She comes back to the island when she comes to know that Shinji is in love with someone else, she gets disappointed because she had been in love with Shinji.

    Yasuo Kawamoto happens to be a jealous, selfish, and arrogant admirer of Hatsue. Chiyoko takes advantage of Yasuo. She uses him to spread bad rumors of Shinji stealing away Hatsue’s virginity.

    Yasuo is so jealous of Shinji that he is ready to go to any extent. He knows that Shinji will take Hatsue’s virginity. One night, Yasuo tries to rape Hatsue when Hatsue is about to fill her bucket of water. He does not succeed. When he tries to strip her clothes off, he is stung by hornets.

    Yasuo is humiliated, however, he makes a deal with Hatsue. He tells her that he will fill his bucket and carry it down the stone steps for Hatsue, but she must not tell anyone that he had tried to rape her.

    Terukichi hears the rumor that Shinji has taken Hatsue’s virginity. He forbids Hatsue to see Shinji. However, Shinji and Hatsue continue to communicate through Jukichi and Ryuji. They write secret letters to each other.

    Shinji comes to meet Terukichi to defend himself by giving his explanation, but Terukichi refuses to meet him. Shinji’s mother knows that her son will never lie. She meets Terukichi. He refuses to see her too. The tension between Shinji and Hatsue begins to increase.

    One day, Chiyoko asks Shinji whether he thinks that she is unattractive. He answers that she is pretty. While going back
