About this ebook

In 1562 Teresa founded the convent of San JosÉ de Ávila, the first of the Carmelites and, at the request of Francisco de Soto y Salazar, her confessor, began writing el Libro de mi vida, influenced by her reading of books on chivalry and compared by some to the Confessions of St. Augustine. This exposed her human and religious concerns and her work and previous experiences. The church hierarchy denounced the book and tried to deport the author to Latin America, but Fray Luis de LeÓn, St. John of the Cross, and the theologian Fray Domingo BÁÑez succeeded in getting the punishment reduced and she was confined in Toledo. This frenetic activity contrasts with the texts in this anthology, which are more domestic and sometimes extremely personal.
