This novelette is a fictional story about a man who is hiding out in Toronto as a participant in the witness protection program after testifying against the son of a high level gangster. Somehow he is found by the criminals and hides out on his own in the company of Yellowknife Native Americans. In northern Canada he finds two mountain lion cubs and enjoys their company as he gets to know them well.

    A Short Story

    With my new friend, Tom, as a passenger I was driving from Edmonton to Yellowknife in a snow storm. Once we were well on our way we realized that we should have acquired some chains for the tires as we had just skidded off the road into a snow bank. We had been stuck here for a couple hours when a bus driver stopped to check on us.

    We quickly explained to the driver that we wanted a ride into the city which was now about a hundred and fifty miles away and that we would hire a tow truck to come for the car. So we climbed into the bus which was having better luck navigating in the snow than we had been. Tom already had a bus ticket but had decided to ride along with me. I didn’t have a ticket yet but the driver explained that I could purchase it in Yellowknife and he would immediately cancel it. So we were on our way again. Tom went right to sleep but I was still a little restless and just leaned back in my seat reflecting on the eventful previous days.

    It was early afternoon when my train had arrived in Edmonton where I located the bus station and ordered some coffee at the lunch counter while trying to decide where, if anyplace, to go next. I was about to get up and check the bus schedules when another customer entered and sat down next to me. The man looked to be middle aged, about the same as me and looked to be Native American. I said hello and the man answered with a smile and hello right back. So I asked where’re you headed for?

    Yellowknife.

    Do you live there? I asked.

    No, but I come from near there.
