    Chapter One: Introduction

    Wild Duck by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen is a very famous play. It was first published in 1884. The Norwegian title of the play is Vildanden.

    Several critics consider Wild Duck as Henrik Ibsen’s masterpiece. The play very skillfully recounts the fatal effects of what Ibsen termed the ‘life lie,’ some kinds of delusions which a person needs to escape from the harsh reality which is intolerable for the person.

    It is said that the character of Hedvig is based on a German girl whom Henrik Ibsen had met while he was completing the play in Gossensass in the summer of 1884. His sister’s name was Hedvig and he was said to be very close to his sister.

    It is also said that his sister was named for their maternal grandmother whose name was Hedevig Paus.

    Another important character Old Ekdal is said to be based on Knud Ibsen, Henrik Ibsen’s father.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

    The first act of the play begins at a dinner party. Hakon Werle, a very rich merchant and industrialist, is the host of the party.

    Hakon Werle’s son, Gregers Werle, is one of the guests at the party. He has just come back to his father’s home after a self-imposed exile. During the party, Gregers comes to know about the fate of Hjalmar Ekdal, his former classmate.

    It transpires that Hjalmar Ekdal has married Gina, a young servant in Hakon Werle’s house. Gregers Werle learns that his father had arranged the match and provided Hjalmar Ekdal a home and profession as a photographer.

    Gregers also learns that his mother has passed away. She died believing that her husband and Gina had an affair. Now, Gregers is furious because he thinks that his old friend, Hjalmar Ekdal, is living a life built on a lie.

    The following four acts of the play take place in Hjalmar Ekdal’s apartment. At first, it appears that Hjalmar Ekdal and Gina are living a very comfortable and cozy life.

    It is revealed that Hjalmar’s earns his livelihood by doing odd copying jobs for Werle. Young Hjalmar runs a photo studio out of the apartment. He makes portraits. His wife, Gina, helps him run the business. She also does the household works.

    Both Hjalmar Ekdal and his father dote on the daughter Hedvig. That
