    Questions - Harry Jay

    Introduction

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; for I will question you, then you answer me! – Job 38: 1-3

The Latin phrase quid pro quo means something for something. Literally speaking, this is an equal exchange of gifts between two parties. Both sides have to contribute something for the other to receive fair value; it cannot be one-sided. The cynical approach to quid pro quo is you scratch my back and I will scratch yours. In business, I have often heard the phrase, having skin in the game. or in other words each partner in a venture shares the risk in some manner.

However, this isn’t a book about quid pro quo. It isn’t even a book that addresses the topic of justice or fairness. It is a book designed to get you to STOP and look at any given situation rationally and objectively.

So let’s begin with the opening verse above. It is taken from the Book of Job. In the Book of Job, Satan states that Job is faithful to God only because Job was blessed with wealth and immense prosperity. From the standpoint of human reasoning, Job has been unfairly treated and singled out wrongfully.

The first 37-chapters of Job record a continuing conversation between Job and four of his friends - Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, Zophar the Naamathite, and Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite – that discusses the injustice directed at Job and all four offer their advice as to why these calamities have befallen their friend Job.

And then…here is the good part…God appears out of a whirlwind and speaks to Job and ASKS Job 93-questions…WOW! Here is what God said:

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; for I will question you, then you answer me! Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding. Who determined the measures of it, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it? Whereupon were the foundations of it fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? "Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it
