About the Author
foreword
This book has been written in response to the many people who have asked me the generic question; "What is it that you and your wife do? The simple, seven word, answer is: we help people to renew their mind. The rest of the book describes how we do it.
Over a period of a couple of years a few of these people have suggested I put pen to paper and explain this process in simple terms so others might benefit. I hope the result will be helpful and that you, the reader, will gain a better understanding of how you actually function as a human being.
Some of the issues I raise will cause controversy and, I hope, will cause you to think, consider and investigate more deeply, about the way your brain, mind and body operate together in real life. I am no stranger to controversy and, as my wife would confirm, love to have argumentative discussions on the topics covered by this book. I probably don't have everything correct, not least because only God has all the answers to a successful life; but I hope and pray there is enough good stuff included to help those who need help.
I hope you manage to read it to the end, and then re-read the parts that most affected you as an individual; and, that you get some benefit from the time you will have spent doing it.
Introduction
I have been influenced by many people during the course of my life, not least by my parents, my wider family, school and college teachers, various individuals at the places I have worked, and, for the past thirty odd years, by Christian leaders and teachers of several different types and persuasions. Some of these people have had a positive affect on my life and some a negative affect. Positive contributions help us along life's journey but negative contributions can have a long lasting, sometimes devastating impact on our future. Without a doubt, the biggest positive influence in my adult life has been my wife of forty-five years. She has been my greatest encourager and has not shied away from prodding me when things arise from my past that needs sorting out. We all need someone in our lives who is courageous enough to hold us accountable for our thoughts and our actions.
I have lived a relatively normal
family life but I know absolutely that some of the events in my early years have had a long lasting negative affect on me and the way I have behaved in adulthood. This belief has developed and consolidated over recent years as the result of reading, listening to, and meditating on, the works of many Christian and secular writers and teachers. During this time I have also gained a better understanding of how the bible has become more and more endorsed by 21st century neurological science.
By getting a wider and better understanding of biblical teaching I have been able to apply the knowledge I have accumulated; and that, in turn, has enabled me to make much progress in a process the apostle Paul calls renewal of the mind. In Hebrews 12:1 we are told to lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us. I will attempt to explain just what these weights
are; how we can hide sin from ourselves without even realising it; and how to carry out Paul's instruction in order that you too can renew parts of your mind that you may not know even exist.
I have discovered that if a person or an event has had a negative affect on my life then the responsibility for changing that negative
into a positive
is exclusively mine. The last sentence sums up what this book is all about so it is worth repeating part of it; if a person or an event has had a negative affect on my life then the responsibility for changing that negative
into a positive
is exclusively mine.
Achieving this change is not a matter of making positive faith
statements. Nor is it simply a matter of a quick prayer, with me expecting God to do all the work. It is about developing a better relationship with God; with me using the abilities He designed into me, and Him doing what only He can do.
I have learnt the hard way that blaming other people, or blaming a bad experience, for the way I react to life's situations is a sure way to a miserable existence! I will give my views on various biblically related subjects and the methods I have learnt that will enable anyone to begin to renew their mind and thereby make a change from a negative to a positive mind-set about a person or an event in their life.
Much of the modern media including news programmes, television and film drama, and written fiction leave us with knowledge of what we think of as our rights
within modern society. At the same time these sources are largely silent about our corresponding responsibilities. This book focuses on me taking responsibility for what is going on in my own mind and in my life. This in turn will progressively enable me to live a more peaceful life. The bible teaches that God can provide us with a peace that passes all understanding (Phil4:7) It is my contention that our experience of that peace is entirely dependant on how much of ourselves, our thoughts and our memories to which we allow God full access.
This book is an attempt to distil what my wife and I have learnt, put into effect in our own lives, and used to help hundreds of other people have better experiences when navigating the trouble spots of daily life.
Before you start to learn about this mind renewal process you should be aware that it is not solely about us helping ourselves, or someone else, to get free from past hurts. God does not need my help, or yours! This process is about all of the people involved developing a better relationship with God. In order to accomplish this He will cause you, or me, to be triggered by our own attitudes or by the attitude of a person we are trying to help. You will find this process can be very painful but you should treat every painful episode as an opportunity to get another part of your mind renewed. The first few years of using this process gave both my wife and myself plenty of such opportunities. After many years of practice these opportunities are still arising; mind renewal is indeed a life long process!
In order to journey towards experiencing more of God's peace we use a process based entirely on biblical principles and have successfully used this process for many years. The book of Ecclesiastes says there is nothing new under the sun and this is certainly true of the principles we use. I have already said that if a person or an event has had a negative affect on my life then the responsibility for changing that negative
into a positive
is exclusively mine. My wife and myself have used elements of teachings and training we have received over several years from many different sources but the real key to success in the process I will describe is to keep God at the centre of what you are doing and to constantly refer anything doubtful to Him.
I have already used the word God
several times so it is important for you to know exactly what I mean by it. I believe in the God of the bible; Father, Son (Jesus) and Holy Spirit. For me, the three-in-one concept means these three aspects comprise one God; my God. I also believe that bible teaching indicates that Jesus will, if I ask Him, intercede on my behalf with the Father and that the Holy Spirit will give me continuous advice in my daily life. The bible tells me the name of Jesus is above every other name; it also tells me that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow (Phil 2:9 &10). The result of this is that I use the name of Jesus, a lot! The prayers I write about in this book are intercessory in nature and therefore I direct them to Jesus.
The methods described in this book can be used by individuals for themselves or, perhaps more easily, by one or two people to help another person in a confidential friendship and prayer setting. Most of the process descriptions I use from now on will focus on my own attempts to have my mind renewed; I believe that if I want to help others, I need to make an attempt
