    PROLOGUE

DROPPING HIS SHIRT in the pile of clothing at the lake’s edge, Gabriel Allen sprinted for the Jet Ski, his best friend, Irving keeping pace. Feet slapping the sand, water splashing the legs of his shorts, he plowed through the shallow water and threw himself across the seat, with a whoop of triumph spinning around, a wide grin on his face. Maybe next time.

Irving waved him off, shaking his head. Go on, Showoff.

Gabriel gunned it, the gust of sudden movement blowing his fine, black hair flat against his skull and a spray of water high over the surface of the lake. Flying across the natural expanse, He soaked in the mid-summer sunshine, a rush of freedom stretching out before him.

A middle-aged man on an expensive bass boat shouted an obscenity, Gabriel’s wake showering his crisp-pressed shirt. Gabriel laughed and did a figure-eight, aiming toward the reed-lined shore. Perfect day. Perfect moment. Perfect—

The smack of the bow against a hidden dock piling sent him airborne, and landing face down in the lake, he sank below the surface, arms akimbo, hands flailing. He bobbed upward, only to stare wide-eyed at the Jet Ski aimed right for him.

No time. Nowhere to go. No way to escape.

A scream strangling in his throat, the weight of the watercraft thrusting him far beneath the surface, he sank into the sea of blood streaming from somewhere below his waist and gave into the blackness swirling in his vision and the sudden knowledge he was going to die.

    CHAPTER 1

    SIX WEEKS LATER

Mrs. Allen, my name is Nina Malloy. I’m here to help your son use his new prosthesis. And this is Arden Vargas. She’s moral support.

Arden stared down at the boy in the wheelchair, all too familiar with the expression on his face. Anger. Hatred. Despair. She glanced up at his mom, an attractive woman whose tired features and strained smile she also recognized. Her sister had looked that way.

Nice to meet you, Ms. Malloy, but I’m afraid you’re fighting a tough battle.

Nina smiled, the look genuine. Arden had been around her long enough to know Nina loved her job and would do whatever it took to work people through this tough time in their life.

I hate to say I’ve seen it all before, but unfortunately, Mrs. Allen, I’ve seen it all before. It’s hard to admit your life has changed. But that’s the key word, changed, not ended. There are great possibilities still in the future.

Nina was forever upbeat. It’s what made her good at this job and valued at the therapy clinic. It was also what grated on patients’ nerves. From the boy’s side of things, you’d rather scream and throw things than smile and be chipper. You wanted a hand on your head, spouting, There, there, your life sucks, not, Buck up. It’ll all be great.

Arden brought her gaze to the boy’s face. He was an attractive teen, not much different in age from herself, a guy she would have flirted with and daydreamed over in the hallways at school on an average day. Yet here he was, his male pride reduced to the stump of his leg, unable to see it was that same pride which was slowly killing him right now.

Now, Nina said, focusing on the
