Open Your Eyes, Genesis and the Origin of Space-Time

About this ebook
Is there any scientific basis for the biblical account of creation, and can any of the theories be verified or disproved? Is the creation narrative meant to be understood literally? Is there any way we can reconcile the age of the world, which the bible asserts is a mere 5775 years, with the geological evidence of 4.5 billion years? Can we logically explain the existence of dinosaur fossils when these creatures did not even merit a mention in the sacred texts? Is it possible that the Hebrew letters themselves are actually the building blocks of creation or that there is a hidden code imbedded within the Mosaic texts? How does one explain what seems to be glaring inaccuracies and inconsistencies in Moses’ account of creation? These and other tantalising questions are addressed with candour and intellectual honesty. Drawing from multiple sources, including traditional Rabbinic opinions, renowned philosophers, and scientific authorities, the answers are sometimes surprising, occasionally disturbing and always thought provoking.

Prologue
We live in an awe inspiring and wonderful universe, surrounded by events and phenomena that are often beyond our comprehension. The human mind has through the centuries developed ideas and sciences which have unravelled many of nature’s mysteries. Using mathematics, physics, chemistry and highly sensitive instruments, we have been able to accurately measure the vast distances between objects in space that are not visible to the naked eye. Electron microscopy has permitted us to examine minute particles and structures of which our ancestors were blissfully ignorant. Advances in medical science have elucidated the causative agents of many illnesses that were once thought to be due to witchcraft and our understanding of the basic
building blocks of life itself has enabled us to manipulate many of the thousands of gene sequences whose precise order of nucleic acids embody the complex code which determines our character traits, our rate of aging and our ability to defend ourselves against many pathogens.
Ancient man was confronted by a world over which he had little control and even less understanding. Natural disasters, plagues and disease were attributed to angering the gods, the spirits of their ancestors or suffering the consequences of curses and spells cast by malevolent witches or wizards who could control the forces of nature.
The last century more than any other, has seen an explosion of knowledge in many divergent fields of science that have enabled us to theorize and answer many of the questions which have perplexed the generations who came before us.
Two questions that occupied the human mind since our earliest ancestors developed the ability to question and to reason logically, have not however been unequivocally answered.
How did we get here and what is the purpose of our existence?
The answer to questions such as these, remains hidden from us, shrouded perhaps in the realm of the supernatural. These we either choose to ignore or consign to matters of faith.
Despite the sophistication of global communication, the
proliferation of universities and colleges and the remarkable manner that our dominant species has conquered this planet and become the unquestionable masters of many aspects of our own fate, the majority of humanity still cling to a steadfast belief that our planet, our solar system and our entire universe was created by an all knowing, all powerful and immortal power who created us and our world for a specific purpose.
Is this belief justified?
Chapter 1
From Moses to the Talmud
The current world human population has been estimated at approximately 7.2 billion. Of this, approximately 2.5 billion are adherents of the Christian faith and some 1.5 – 2 billion adherents embrace the Muslim faith. Both of these two religions are monotheistic (believe in one God) who is essentially the same God who was introduced to the world by Abraham the forefather of the children of Israel. While there are some variations in the story, more than half the world’s population still adheres to the biblical story of creation as laid down by Moses in Genesis, the first book of the Torah (Pentateuch).
More than 3.9 Billion copies of the bible have been sold, and it is still undisputed the most published and widely read book in the world. The story of creation as told in the bible is however in many ways completely at odds with the scientific explanations of how the universe originated.
Who was Moses and how did someone who was a mere mortal, come to write this intriguing account of early history that comprises far more than just the tale of a people being freed from bondage?
How did a man who lived at the end of the Bronze Age, long before the discoveries of modern science, gain such exquisite insights into the nature of the world since its inception, the purpose of creation and our place in the universe? Is there any scientific basis for the stories of the bible and can they be verified or disproved?
Moses was born at a time that the children of Israel were subject to severe subjugation and hardship. Their illustrious forbear Joseph had been forgotten and all of Jacob’s sons had died. Apart from the descendants of Levi (who had outlived all of his brothers), the Hebrew speaking people had become a downtrodden class of slaves to their Egyptian masters. Fearing their numbers and the potential threat to his dominion, Pharaoh the supreme ruler of Egypt ordered that all male children born to the Hebrew slaves should be drowned in the river Nile. (Exodus. 1:22).
According to Jewish belief, Moses was born on 7 Adar in the year 2368 from Creation (circa 1400 BCE) the son of Amram, a member of the tribe of Levi, and Yocheved, Levi’s daughter (Exodus. 6:16-20). The only unusual thing about his birth was his mother’s advanced age: According to the biblical record, Yocheved was born while Jacob and his family were entering Egypt, so she was 130 when Moses was conceived. His father named him Chaver, and his grandfather called him Avigdor.
Yocheved hid her baby boy for three months, and when she could no longer hide him, she put him in a little ark and placed it on the river where Pharaoh’s daughter bathed. Pharaoh’s daughter found the child and had compassion on him (Exodus. 2:6). According to Jewish legend (Midrash), her name was Batya, in Islamic tradition she is known as Asiya and is claimed to be Pharaohs wife. Josephus refers to her as Thermuthis.
Pharaoh’s daughter’s handmaidens found the baby in the basket among the bulrushes while their mistress was bathing in the Nile. She named the baby Minios, which means drawn out
in Egyptian, and the name Moshe (Moses) was a Hebrew
