After he conquered lands, what made Alexander different, was how he adopted some of their values, dress and culture. Early Years

Alexander was born in Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia, in the northern part of modern Greece. The calendar used by the ancient Greeks is different to the one we use today so it is impossible to know the exact date of his birth. It is estimated that he was born on July 20, in 356 BC.

Alexander’s father was the king of Macedon, Philip II. Kings of this time had many wives, and Philip himself had seven. It is difficult to say for certain which one was Alexander’s mother but it is thought that it was Olympias of Epirus. She was the principle wife.

Alexander is the subject of many Greek legends; one said that Olympias dreamt that her womb was struck by a thunder bolt just before she found out she was pregnant. The ancient Greeks believed in many powerful Gods, like Zeus, the god of the sky and thunder. Some ancient Greeks believed that Alexander was the son of Zeus.
