    A Kathleen Murphey Mystery #1 - T. L. Pruitt

I’m in Gene’s office preparing to take a deposition of a man accused of kidnapping a 2-year-old girl.  I lug in my computer bag on one shoulder, dragging a suitcase on wheels with my available arm, while carrying my much-needed, hot, black cup of coffee in my hand.

The appointment is for 9:00 AM but I always get to where I need to be 45 minutes early.  It takes a while to set everything up and if, God forbid, something were to malfunction, I’d have time to correct it before the deposition begins.

The job is the same-ole-same-ole so I get set up without even realizing my process.  If asked what order I do things in, I probably couldn’t tell you because the whole time I’m setting things up, I have my day-to-day life going through my mind.

Ten minutes to nine, I run to the restroom because it’s promising to be a long deposition.  And as the saying goes, you only rent coffee.  Five minutes to nine, everyone is in place and the questions begin.

Gene Woods, the quote/unquote host of this gathering, sits at the head of the conference table in a chair three inches higher than all the other chairs in the room.  He feels it adds height to his 5’ 7" frame and lends a false sense of power to his ego.

How are you doing today, Mr. Fulsom, Gene says in a way intended to make Brad Fulsom feel lowly.  Fulsom doesn’t want to be there and is trying to convince Gene that this is all one big misunderstanding.  Of course, Fulsom has been here before and managed to get out of it.  More than once, actually.

I’ve been better, Fulsome said, nodding three or four times.

Yes, yes, yes, Gene mimics the head nods.  As I’m sure Counsel has told you, I have a few questions in regards to a missing child....

I always hear the beginning of depositions, then go into auto-pilot and while my hands are working their magic on my stenograph machine, I’m going through my to-do list in my head.  Every deposition is important, but being a court reporter requires a person to be very eclectic.  It’s like making supper while helping your kids
