In the late 1800s, postcards of Indianapolis began appearing in mailboxes throughout the country. Since that time, the many prominent monuments, buildings, and parks of the Hoosier capital have been featured on countless cards.
Using an impressive collection of these images, author W.C. Madden takes the reader on an historic journey through Indianapolis from 1890 to 1950, providing a visual history of the development of the city. Indianapolis experienced great growth during the first half of the 20th century, which gave rise to innovative art and architectural structures, many that serve as the subject of postcards featured here. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument, the Indiana World War Memorial, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Union Station, and Claypool Hotel, to name a few, are all highlighted.
Über den Autor
Author W.C. Madden captures the history of baseball in the Circle City- including semi-pro and amateur clubs, youth baseball and a vintage base ball scene that is a throw back to a by-gone era-with more than 130 images dating back to the 1880s. Madden, an Indianapolis native, chairs the regional chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research. This is his seventh book about the game he still plays and loves-baseball.

MONUMENTS
SOLDIERS AND SAILORS MONUMENT. This monument, dedicated on May 15, 1902, is the most popular attraction in Indianapolis and has come to symbolize the city. An outstanding achievement of architectural and sculptural art, the Solders and Sailors Monument was designed by Bruno Schmitz, an architect from Berlin, Germany. At the time it was built at the turn of century, it towered above the cobblestone streets and all other buildings in Indianapolis.
