About this ebook

Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin was born into Russian nobility in Moscow on 26th May, 1799. His father was able to trace his distinguished ancestry back to the 12th century and his mother came from Swedish and German nobility. Pushkin’s great grandfather was a black African, rescued from slavery by Peter the Great who raised and educated him. To the present day, Pushkin is still considered as the greatest poet Russia has ever produced and the founder of Russian literature. His talent was recognised from the age of 15 when he published his first poem but due to his commitment to social reform and his becoming a spokesperson for the radical literary set, he was unpopular with the Tsarist government who expelled him from the capital and prevented him from travelling or publishing at will. In 1828 he met and proposed to the famed teenage beauty, Natalya Goncharova but she didn’t accept his proposal until she received assurances from the government that Pushkin would not be persecuted. They eventually married in 1830 and had 4 children. Opinion is divided as to whether Pushkin was a Romantic or paved the way for Realism, but it is unanimously agreed that his literary legacy cannot be over estimated as his rich talent for expression spread into Russian culture with his invention of numerous new words or claques that are still used today. He died on 10th February 1837. Here we publish some of his finest works.

The Poetry Of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin

Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin was born into Russian nobility in Moscow on 26th May, 1799.  His father was able to trace his distinguished ancestry back to the 12th century and his mother came from Swedish and German nobility although Pushkin’s great grandfather was a black African, rescued from slavery by Peter the Great who raised and educated him.

They eventually married in 1830 and had 4 children with his great granddaughter, Nadejda, marrying the uncle of Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Whilst opinion is divided as to whether Pushkin was a Romantic or paved the way for Realism, it is unanimously agreed that his literary legacy cannot be over estimated as his rich talent for expression spread into Russian culture with his invention of numerous new words or claques that are still used today.  He died on 10th February 1837 but numerous places are named in his honour throughout the world and beyond - a planet discovered in 1997 and a crater on Mercury.

    A Little Bird

In alien lands I keep the body

Of ancient native rites and things:

I gladly free a little birdie

    At celebration of the spring.

    I'm now free for consolation,

    And thankful to almighty Lord:

At least, to one of his creations

I've given freedom in this world!

    A Serenade

    I watch Inesilla

    Thy window beneath,

    Deep slumbers the villa

    In night's dusky sheath.

    Enamoured I linger,

    Close mantled, for thee

    With sword and with guitar,

    O look once on me!

    Art sleeping? Wilt wake thee

    Guitar tones so light?

    The argus-eyed greybeard

    My swift sword shall smite.

    The ladder of ropes

    Throw me fearlessly now!

    Dost falter? Hast thou, Sweet,

    Been false to thy vow?

    I watch Inesilla

    Thy window beneath,

    Deep slumbers the villa

    In night's dusky sheath!

    A Magic Moment I Remember

    A magic moment I remember:

I raised my eyes and you were there,

    A fleeting vision, the quintessence

Of all that's beautiful and rare

I pray to mute despair and anguish,

To vain the pursuits world esteems,

Long did I hear your soothing accents,

Long did your features haunt my dreams.

Time passed. A rebel storm-blast scattered

The reveries that once were mine

And I forgot your soothing accents,

    Your features gracefully divine.

In dark days of enforced retirement

I gazed upon grey skies above

With no ideals to inspire me

No one to cry for, live for, love.

    Then came a moment
