The Los Gatos High School English 9 honors classes are back with a brand new, poetry-filled anthology full of everything the student authors are feeling in their lives and thinking about the world around them. English teachers Tonya McQuade and Kathleen Wehr, in partnership with Smashwords CEO Mark Coker and Los Gatos Town Librarian Henry Bankhead, headed up the project, with six classes of students contributing a wide variety of poetic works, from humorous to inspiring to deeply personal. After submitting their poems, the students organized into project teams in order to produce their ebook, including Marketing and Publicity, Editing, Layout and Design, Art and Photography, and Event Planning. Smashwords provided the classes with the information, tools, and platform needed for them to self-publish the book and get it out on the market.       Bleeding Ink

      Poetry is freedom.

      It is the ability to bleed ink

      From your heart onto the paper.

      It is the sound of hostility,

      Resignation, and peace.

      It feels like silk slowly sliding down your arm,

      And it feels like knives cutting down your back.

      It looks like a demon from hell,

      But it can portray inner beauty inside of the beast.

      It smells like burnt rubber,

      But also like savory lavender incense.

      Poetry is all of these things and more;

      It is an encompassing idea of existence.

      That is what poetry is:

      Life.

      Poetry is Art

      Poetry can be silly;

      Poetry can be deep.

      The meanings can be easy,

      but sometimes your mind must take a leap.

      There are poems about love

      and Carpe Diem, too.

      You can write an epic poem

      or just a short haiku.

      Maybe you’ll have meter,

      or maybe you’ll have rhyme.

      Write what’s in your heart,

      and it won’t take up any time.

      Or just go read a poem

      because there’ll be one just for you:

      Robert Frost, Silverstein,

      Langston Hughes, or Doctor Seuss.

      Poems are endless beauty,

      and they are required curriculum, too.

      So you pretty much have to read them,

      even if you don’t want to.

      A Soulful Epiphany

      Poetry is defined as the literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm. Despite the technicality of that definition, poetry holds much more meaning in my life.

      Before we started this unit, I enjoyed poetry but did not have significant feelings about it. To me, it was merely something to pass the time, to take me away from the reality I lived in. I did not see any personal connections with what I was reading. Although I had come across many powerful pieces that I saw as deeply thought-provoking, I had not completely immersed myself in the art of poetry.

      During the unit, I decided to really explore myself emotionally. I wanted to dig deeper into my inner thoughts and feelings and express them in an artistic way. Through this, I reached an emotional enlightenment, as I saw that I could passionately convey what I could not say out loud. This transformation has led me to find another emotional outlet.

      Now, poetry has become a platform for me to vent my sentiment towards things in my life. I use poems and words as a tool to better understand the world around me. I often find myself writing as a way of dealing with my personal issues. It offers a comfort that is unique to this art, and that I cannot find anywhere else.

      At the beginning of this unit, I merely enjoyed poetry in the way it could powerfully relate things in life. Now, I realize how much it drives passion and emotion as both writers and readers are made to truly consider their inner thoughts. Poetry has become very personal to me as I see that the way someone perceive words tells a lot more about who they are than who the writer of those words is.

      The Rhythm of Art

      Poetry is an attempt to convey stories and emotions using only words. In just a few stanzas, a good poem can get across the feeling of the author, be it depression, happiness, or even love. It describes passion, adventure, and thrill. It is a story that touches your heart and causes you to see things in a new way; a flowing rhythm that catches your attention and allows you the rare opportunity to see the world through the eyes of another.

      Through this unit, I was able to read and appreciate many great poets that I had not heard of before. I had never thought of songs as poetry put to music, and it gives me a greater appreciation for musical artists. I was able to look back on my favorite childhood books and see the rhythmic beauty behind them.

      I suppose that poetry is music for those who cannot play an instrument, a voice for those who have none; for as you see all around you, the worst off often have the best art. This could be because poetry is what truly comes from the heart and that there is just so much emotion behind it.

      Most young poets just write for themselves, or present their poems to their peers, but few have the opportunity to share their work with a larger audience. What people refuse to see is that even poems young poets write are still art; as much so as a painting or a symphony. They can cause just as much emotion, if not more. Poems will paint a vivid image and sing you the most gorgeous piece you have heard in your life.

      Jumbled Feelings, Diverged into One

      Poetry can be defined in so many ways. To many, it is love letters, it is songs, it is beauty in speech. To me, it is simply another language: one without rules, only suggestions. Poetry is a way to communicate a feeling that can come with so many others. I think that when you read a poem, there are many ways to interpret it. People become concerned because what if the way they read it is not the way the poet intended? But that is the point. When someone has a feeling, it isn’t just one. It is tangled and tugged and tossed with so many others. The first one that comes to mind for the reader may not be the exact feeling the bard had, but it is directly connected.

      Poetry is the silent understanding between poet and reader. It is the empty space between being sure and fully understanding. It is open ended with a knot. It is interpretation and appreciation, without the contemplation. Poetry is for those who can manipulate words to emanate feeling. It is for the broken and hurt, the euphoric and dancing, the living and dead. It is for everyone during all aspects of their life. Conveying heavy emotions, or blowing clouds of butterflies, poetry can be written and read by all.

      I think that is what makes it so vast and different. Essays are rigid and strict like barbed wire surrounding an abandoned house. Poetry is the story the children inside the home can tell, the fear they felt climbing
