Chapter I
Martin Elling was the happiest person I had ever met, no doubt about it.
I remember the first time I laid eyes on him. It was a crisp autumn day and he was walking across the main quadrangle of the campus, kicking the gold and rust colored leaves before him like a little boy on a Saturday morning. His expression was joyous.
There’s a happy camper,
I said absently to Mike, who sat with me on the steps of Anglican Hall.
Oh, that’s Elling,
he replied. I met him last week in the cafeteria. Great guy. A bit odd.
Mike waved to Elling, caught his eye, and he joined us. Mike made introductions.
Glad to meet you,
Elling said with a grin, pumping my hand firmly but briefly. Up close, he looked like an ordinary fellow - average size, nondescript, nothing really remarkable - but he had such an unabashed openness about him that he was hard to ignore. I liked him right off. I came to learn that most people liked him right off. Those who did not…well, that said more about them than Elling.
It turned out that Elling was taking an intro course in comparative religions and a couple of Bible Survey courses, as he was in the discernment process to see if he had a vocation. Vocation to what, he was not sure. He had completed two years at the state university, majoring in education, but decided to explore some career in the church before committing to education. I was working on my M.Div. and headed straight for the priesthood, so we had something in common.
Lucky you!
he said, lighting up when I mentioned my career path. What a blessing it must be to know what God has planned for you.
A bit taken aback, I mumbled something like, Yes, well, uh, it is, I suppose, uh, runs in the family. Dad is a priest, and so was my grandfather on my mother’s side…
and other lame explanations. Elling was not put off in the least, and said he envied me that I knew my own mind so well.
What a great place this is!
he said, looking around the campus. Wonderful professors. They seem much more interested in making priests than my former professors were interested in making teachers.
I hope they’re as interested in making Christians as they are priests,
Mike cracked. Cynicism was all the rage then; it substituted for thought.
Elling looked puzzled. "You think so? Hmm. I’d of thought that would be more between me and
