    Chapter I

Martin Elling was the happiest person I had ever met, no doubt about it.

I remember the first time I laid eyes on him. It was a crisp autumn day and he was walking across the main quadrangle of the campus, kicking the gold and rust colored leaves before him like a little boy on a Saturday morning. His expression was joyous.

There’s a happy camper, I said absently to Mike, who sat with me on the steps of Anglican Hall.

Oh, that’s Elling, he replied. I met him last week in the cafeteria. Great guy. A bit odd.

A bit taken aback, I mumbled something like, Yes, well, uh, it is, I suppose, uh, runs in the family. Dad is a priest, and so was my grandfather on my mother’s side… and other lame explanations. Elling was not put off in the least, and said he envied me that I knew my own mind so well.

What a great place this is! he said, looking around the campus. Wonderful professors. They seem much more interested in making priests than my former professors were interested in making teachers.

I hope they’re as interested in making Christians as they are priests, Mike cracked. Cynicism was all the rage then; it substituted for thought.

Elling looked puzzled. "You think so? Hmm. I’d of thought that would be more between me and
