When I was young, I wanted to be a lawyer when I grew up. But then I changed my mind because being a famous, yet totally undercover secret agent would be much cooler. I looked into it, but there weren’t many job opportunities. I concluded that maybe I should just marry well. I fell deeply in love with Agent Mulder, but he already had Scully, and I don’t share. So, instead, I became a writer. Now I get to be all of those things and so many more. You can follow me on Twitter @LisaFoxRomance.

    Chapter One

The stage door slammed shut behind Zoe with a loud and final bang. The lock engaged, a deafening click that vibrated inside her skull. The metal of the door was hard against her back, a solid barrier between her and everything she had ever desired. She touched the cool surface, just a slight brush of her fingertips, then squared her shoulders and stepped out into the sidewalk traffic. There was no going back. That way was closed.

She merged into the never-ending flow of humanity, the shoppers and tourists, businesspeople and families. Huge buildings, all glass and metal and neon lights, framed the controlled chaos on the streets. She sidestepped around a man in a bright red jumpsuit sweeping cigarette butts off the sidewalk as a light breeze skimmed down Broadway, bringing the delicious scent of hot-roasted nuts. Horns honked, drivers cursed, a man stood on a corner, crooning into a microphone about the healing powers of the Lord while people lounged on the red TKTS steps, taking in a bit of afternoon sun. Just another fine day in Times Square.

Zoe crossed the avenue, keeping up with the hectic pace of the crowd, but dreading the long trek back to the bus station. When she’d arrived that morning, her journey across town had been filled with hope and anticipation. Now, it was her own personal walk of shame. What a difference a few hours could make. She looked up at the buildings and sighed. She’d give anything to get that feeling back, to not have to deal with the crushing defeat.

A hot wind blew up from the subway grates below, a hard puff of air as a train rumbled through the underground station. It ruffled the short red dress she’d worn for the audition, creating the perfect Marilyn Monroe moment. Zoe smiled as she held down her skirt, imagining camera bulbs flashing, adoring fans calling her name. The chance of something like that happening—the likelihood it would happen if she ever succeeded—was exactly the reason she had come to New York, why she always wanted to be in New York. She was standing in the middle of the Great White Way where every dream was possible and magic occurred eight times a week.

A little girl in a sparkly tutu skipped by, herding her daddy ever onward. Her face glowed as she tugged on his hand, encouraging him to go faster, loudly expressing her absolute need to get to Radio City Music Hall immediately. Zoe smiled as they passed. She’d been right around the little girl’s age the first time she’d ever seen New York. The instant her parents’ compact sedan emerged from the tunnel into the heart of the midtown Manhattan, she’d been dazzled by everything—the lights, the people, the constant activity. Even the smell of the city appealed to her, hot tar and exhaust, warm pretzels and concrete. The streets seemed alive, humming with a vital energy that made her wonderfully lightheaded.

The trip was supposed to be a one-time, grand celebration of her parents’ tenth wedding anniversary, but for Zoe, it was the start of a lifelong love affair. As part of their week long getaway package, her parents bought tickets to see Grease on Broadway. Those Magic Changes was the first song they danced to at their 1950s-themed senior prom, and according to her mother, the very instant she knew she was going to marry Zoe’s father. Zoe wasn’t sure she believed the tale even then—her mother liked to romanticize even the most mundane things—but it was a good story and a great reason to see the show.

There had been a long line outside the theater when they arrived, the most people Zoe had ever seen collected in a single space. She’d clutched her father’s hand to her chest as they made their slow progress toward the entrance, afraid that she would lose him in the crowd, but her concern was forgotten the moment they entered the orchestra section. She gaped at the opulence, the golden light cascading down from the high, ornate ceiling, the grand arcs of the mezzanines.

She could barely breathe by the time the usher escorted them to their seats, her pulse quick and fluttering. She was mesmerized by the stage, by the thick, red, velvet curtain, and all that could be going on behind it. Electric anticipation still raced over her every time she thought about it—even all these years later. Excitement blazed in her chest as the first chords of music tickled the air, and when the curtains finally parted, her heart just about burst. She was enchanted, swept up in the magic, and totally, willingly under its spell. That night, she found her life’s calling. Someday she was going to be just like those people on stage. Someday she was going to be under those lights.

A piercing whistle sliced through her thoughts as a bike messenger flew past her, startling her back to harsh reality. This city, that
