What’s this?
Ally Mayberry picked up the sheet of paper that had fallen from her father’s notebook. She read it all and then handed it back to him.
Oh, that’s about the three-point trophy,
he said. Ally’s father was preparing for the annual pee wee basketball draft that would be held the next afternoon. It’s the first year the league has had a three-point line. It should be fun for you guys.
Mr. Mayberry had coached Ally’s basketball teams each year since she’d started playing. That was a whole two years ago. His draft picks always went in the same order: If a coach had a daughter in the league, she was automatically his first-round pick.
After that, he’d always picked PJ, who happened to be Ally’s best friend. PJ probably wasn’t the best player available when it was Mr. Mayberry’s turn to pick. Making sure Ally and PJ were happy was worth it, though.
So, you think I should pick PJ in the second round?
he asked jokingly.
Of course,
Ally answered. We’ve always been on the same team.
What about the Harrington girl? Do you know her?
he asked.
Mary?
Ally’s dad glanced back at his notebook.
No, not Mary . . . it says Sarah here,
he said. If no one has picked her, she looks like the best player in the league. I could pick her and then probably pick PJ in the next round.
It made sense, Ally had to admit. PJ was a pretty decent player but wasn’t close to being the best in the league.
What if someone else picks her?
