Beschreibung

This extraordinary collection of engravings provides designers and commercial artists with a magnificent sourcebook of Victorian-era plant images — all royalty-free. Included are 2,400 crisply detailed illustrations of hundreds of plants — from lilies, lichens, mushrooms and marigolds, to poppies, palms, maples, and mosses. Selected from rare publications dating from the 1840s to the turn of the century, the illustrations encompass a wide range of plant species and classifications: garden flowers, cactuses, bromeliads, ferns, deciduous trees, evergreens, grasses, legumes, orchids, nightshades, and many more. All are identified with Latin or common names and are arranged alphabetically by family. Also presented are specialized appendices on edible foods, medicinal herbs, and plants used in decoration and in graphic design, including borders and motifs. Created during a period when wood engraving had reached its zenith and become a greatly refined art, these splendid royalty-free illustrations will be an indispensable and inspirational resource for artists and craftspeople working in a variety of areas. The collection will also delight botanists, gardeners, and collectors of old engravings, all of whom are sure to treasure this tribute to the beauty and infinite variety of the plant kingdom.

DOVER BOOKS ON PLANTS AND ANIMALS

INTRODUCTION

As an artist, illustrator, and graphic designer with long experience in working with nineteenth-century engraved images, my intention in putting together this book has been to make available for others an ultimate resource book having the finest available plant images that the late Victorian period had to offer. This book is not only intended to provide fine images of many different plant species and varieties, but also, whenever possible, to offer a range of two or more alternative choices from which the artist or designer can make his or her selection. This book, of course, is equally intended for those others who have a great appreciation of the beauty and infinite variety within the plant kingdom and who, I hope, will find the old pictures reproduced in this volume both interesting and pleasing to the eye.

Much of this material is now quite rare—and expensive if one has the good fortune to come across it. The earliest material in this book is from A History of British Forest Trees, Indigenous and Introduced, published in 1842. The most recent material dates from the early 1900s; however the great bulk of it dates from 1875 to 1895, when wood engraving had reached its zenith. During most of the nineteenth century, wood engraving was the primary method by which pictorial images were reproduced throughout the publishing industry. By 1875 this process had become greatly refined so that very realistic and graphic representations of images could be achieved. However, by 1895, this method had largely been replaced by the halftone photographic method, which was less costly and less time consuming, and which continues in use to this day. Because nineteenth-century engravings have a high graphic quality and, at the same time, are in the public domain and thus copyright free, they continue to have a special appeal.

As one might imagine, the task of trying to organize a project of this size required making certain choices and compromises. After considering various possibilities, I decided to organize the book alphabetically by category according to the plant families and to include a final section with a number of specialized appendices.

For the most part, the plant’s Latin name is specified. However, on occasion, due to the
