    Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin is a famous short story. It was first published in the year 1957. The story was republished in a collection called Going to Meet the Man in the year 1965.

    It is one of the earliest works of James Baldwin. The story has remained highly popular with academic circles and educational institutions. It is a favorite of college anthologists. It is said to be one of the most widely read short stories.

    With the success of the author’s collection of short stories, including the present story, Baldwin evolved as a writer. Sonny’s Blues is considered as an important and moving addition to Baldwin’s literary creations.

    The story was first published in a well-known American literary magazine called the ‘Partisan Review.’ It was published in the early years of the Civil Rights Movement. The story basically explores the themes of suffering, community, and redemption.

    Sonny’s Blues is set in Harlem. Baldwin was very well-acquainted with Harlem community.

    The story revolves around the lives of two brothers. The elder brother attempts hard to assimilate into a white-dominate culture. Consequently, he remains away from his heritage and his family.

    The younger brother happens to be a heroin addict. He is a jazz musician. He attempts very hard to transform his suffering and the suffering of his community into music.
