The story was first published in a well-known American literary magazine called the ‘Partisan Review.’ It was published in the early years of the Civil Rights Movement. The story basically explores the themes of suffering, community, and redemption.
Sonny’s Blues
is set in Harlem. Baldwin was very well-acquainted with Harlem community.
The story revolves around the lives of two brothers. The elder brother attempts hard to assimilate into a white-dominate culture. Consequently, he remains away from his heritage and his family.
The younger brother happens to be a heroin addict. He is a jazz musician. He attempts very hard to transform his suffering and the suffering of his community into music.
When the story reaches its climax, the elder brother listens to the music created by his
