Chapter 1
A HOLY SPIRIT PARADIGM SHIFT
One summer morning a number of years ago, I was spending the first hour of my day reading the Bible in my devotion time. In the process of my reading that morning, I came across a verse I had read more than a hundred times since becoming a Christian. That verse was III John 2, which says,
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
Though I had read this verse countless times before, I had never seen it like the Holy Spirit revealed it to me that particular day. It was an amazing new insight to me. I knew if I had read it correctly, it was revelation that could change my life and the lives of others forever. It was as if bells and whistles and a light show were all going off in my spirit! I sat in awe as I read it over again.
Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper…I realized this scripture included financial prosperity. And be in health…I could also clearly see that physical health was included.
Then the Spirit had me focus on something I had never noticed any of the times I had read it before. It was the last phrase of the verse: Even as thy soul prospereth. All of a sudden I saw it. The phrase even as
means according to
or only as much as
. In that moment, I realized my financial prosperity and physical health are linked directly to the prosperity of my soul!
I probably should not have been so surprised that morning. After all, it had only been seven months earlier, at the beginning of the year, when I had sensed the Lord impressing me to read through the Word with a new Bible. It was to be a Bible that did not contain any of my personal notes. He wanted me to read His Word from Genesis to Revelation like I had never read it with the promise He would reveal things to me I had not seen before. On that warm summer morning, He indeed fulfilled that promise to me from one of the last chapters in the Bible.
My mind raced as I read it over again. Could this really be true? And if it was true, why hadn’t I heard others teach it before? Initially I was angry as I realized that in over twenty years of my Christian life, I had never heard anyone teach this. It seemed to me that every minister should be teaching something as important and life changing as this!
The Lord calmed me and impressed upon me there was no need to be upset because He was teaching me this principle right then, directly through His Word and by His Spirit. Then I wondered, If this principle is so important, why didn’t the apostle John write ten more chapters in the book of III John to instruct us on the principles of developing a prosperous soul?
Again the Lord quickly answered my question by letting me know He had already placed instruction throughout His book, the Bible, regarding how to have a prosperous soul. It was up to me to search and study His Word to discover, know, and apply these principles.
As I meditated on what the Lord had just shown me, I realized it was imperative for me to understand what constitutes a prosperous soul and yield to those principles in my life. If this verse was true it meant when I searched His Word, discovered, and implemented the keys to having a prosperous soul in my life, my sick days and broke days would be over!
I began to focus my attention on matters of the soul. I searched His Word for other scriptures that pertained to the truth I had discovered. One of the first things I discovered involved the relationship and difference between my spirit and my soul.
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion…(Genesis 1:26)
You and I are created in the image of God. When you were born again you received His image in your born-again spirit. Your spirit man is pure, holy, and in right relationship with God. In your spirit you are whole, well, and filled with the faith and love of God. Your spirit is sealed and perfect. Hopefully you are getting the picture of what the Lord showed me: Problems do not arise from your perfect, born-again spirit. They arise from the well of your soul.
While His image is found in your perfect and sealed spirit man, His likeness is found in the realm of your soul where your mind, will, and emotions reside. When your soul conforms to the likeness of your spirit, then you will walk in greater dominion and experience greater victory in life. However, if you observe the body of Christ, you will quickly realize most are not walking in dominion or victory in life even though it is God’s will for them. God’s will for us as believers created in His image is to yield our souls to His likeness in our spirits and walk in dominion over sickness, disease, poverty and lack.
Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them. (Proverbs 22:5)
I think we would all like to be far from the thorns and snares in life that threaten to harm us. This scripture tells us if we keep
our souls we will be free from them. Keeping
your soul involves making sure your soul is getting and staying in sync with your born-again spirit. The problem arises when your soul does not mirror your spirit. Instead of being in the likeness of God as it was created to be, it is oftentimes in the likeness of Adam, which creates a dam
in the soul. Yielding to Adam (your un-renewed mind and uncontrolled emotions) in your soul creates a dam
and makes it difficult to receive from God. Healing and everything else you receive from God comes from the inside out. While the life of Jesus is in your righteous spirit, it will not manifest in your life until your soul comes in alignment with your spirit. Success in life and ministry depends on this powerful truth!
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock…(Revelation 3:20)
A soul that is cluttered with unforgiveness, bitterness, anger, greed, pride, lust, idolatry, fear, and cares will crowd out Jesus, His life, healing, provision, and nature. He is in our spirits knocking at the door of our souls for the opportunity to enter into areas we have chosen to hold on to and compartmentalize, denying Him access. All this clutter will prevent the life of God within you from flowing out. Sadly, in the life of many believers, Jesus is on the outside of our souls looking in!
When you are born again you receive a new nature, the nature of Christ, in your spirit. You are just like Jesus in your spirit man. But this is not automatically true about the condition of your soul. Your mind must be renewed. Your emotions and will must be conformed to the image of Christ in order for your soul to come into the likeness of your spirit.
With many believers, Jesus is in their spirits, but He is knocking on the door of their souls to find entrance and expression. His desire is for our souls to prosper so we can experience health and prosperity on a consistent basis. The meaning of prosperity is success in business affairs
or a good journey.
Financial lack and physical sickness are not indicative of a good journey. According to III John 2, your soul must experience a good journey before your pocketbook, business, or body will experience a good journey.
After this truth of soul prosperity became revelation to me, I realized I had unknowingly implemented it in my life and ministry at certain times. I had not categorized it as such or realized what I was doing at the time. I became aware that even though I had applied these principles unknowingly, I had seen success. After the Spirit made it clear to me, I decided to focus on this newfound truth with purpose and apply it in my life and in the congregation I served as pastor.
Once I understood the importance of soul prosperity, I began to teach these principles to the people in our church and focus on their soul health as I ministered to them.
