The Red Tent, the title of the story, refers to the tent in which women of Jacob’s tribe have to live during menstruation and at the time of giving birth to children. It is an ancient law and custom.

It is in that red tent, their sisters, mothers, and aunts support and encourage the women who are going through menstruation or giving birth.

Since the author has adapted the biblical story of Jacob’s family, the novel has always been controversial.

According to some critics, particularly Jewish and Christians, the author has deliberately made this story blasphemous, against the Bible.

The author is accused of changing basic elements of the stories of Jacob and his wives. They say that the author has presented Leah and Rachel as polytheistic. The controversy has never been resolved.

Some readers who do not take religious very seriously say that The Red Tent s a story that tries to bridge the gaps in the Bible. Such readers call the book a midrash, which means interpretation in Jewish language.

In spite of much controversy, it has been a successful novel. When it was first published, there was no advertising budget, but the success was quite impressive.

There were not many reviews in major newspapers or magazines. However, the readers spread the message through word of mouth, owing to the loyalty of the book’s readers.

The independent bookstores strongly supported the novel. The author also got the support of the clergy and some of them preached about the novel from the pulpit.

In the year 2001, The Red Tent became a New York Times Bestseller. Likewise, it became the bestselling book according to the Booksense Book of the year.

Good Harbor was the next novel that was published by the author after the success of The Red Tent.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

Dinah, the narrator and protagonist of the story, begins the story with the recounting of the union of Leah and Jacob, her mother and father. She also tells the reader about her mother’s sister Rachel, and Zilpah and Bilhah, the handmaids.

She describes Leah as capable and Rachel as something of a belle. However, she describes that Rachel is kind and creative. She describes Zilpah as eccentric and spiritual. According to Dinah, Bilhah is kind and quiet.

Dinah recounts the day she was with her mother and aunts in the red tent. They were discussing the local events. They were also performing their domestic duties between their visits to Jacob, the head of the family.

There are several other characters in this story. They do not appear in the biblical account. They include Leban’s second wife Ruti and her sons.
