    Despite being one of the most talked about mental health conditions, most people know very little about ADHD.  This is due in part to many misconceptions about the disorder.  One of the most common misconceptions is that it isn’t real, that it was made up by the pharmaceutical industry in order to sell stimulant medication. 

    The truth is, the symptoms that are now grouped together and called ADHD have been documented for more than 100 years.  We also know, based on research conducted over the last decade, that ADHD is a brain-based disorder, and that those with the condition display differences in brain structure and neurotransmitter ratio when compared to the brains of those without the condition.

    The other most common misconception is that the only way to treat ADHD is with stimulant medication.  The truth is that medication can be very effective at alleviating the symptoms many people with ADHD experience but medication doesn’t work for about 1 in 5 people with ADHD.  Additionally, the side effects that can be experienced with ADHD medications can cause severe enough side effects in some people that they cannot use medication as part of
