About this ebook

When a lobsterman discovers a sunken ship, Cranberry Island is abuzz with excitement. Is the wreck the remains of the Myra Barton, the missing ship of island sea captain Jonah Selfridge? Or the elusive Black Marguerite, which belonged to one of the most notorious pirates of the 17th century and vanished without a trace—except for the ghost ship that old-timers say roams the water on fog-shrouded nights?

Soon the island is swarming with marine archaeologists and treasure hunters. It's good news for Natalie—and for the Gray Whale Inn—until a body turns up floating near the wreck. Natalie finds herself immersed in the world of pirates and sunken treasure, both past and present. Will she solve the mystery and find the killer in time? Or will Natalie be the next to join the lost ship's crew, down in Davy Jones' locker?

This is a fun cozy mystery series based in the Cranberry Isles of Maine. I love the references to area in which I have spent time. It gives me a melancholy feeling when I read them.

The series is based on Natalie, a young 30-something woman who relocated to the Cranberry Island of the coast of Bar Harbor, Maine. She left her friends, family and career behind in Austin, Texas when she discovered her fiance was sleeping around.

Natalie moved lock, stock and barrel and purchased an old shipping magnate's home and turned it into the Gray Whale Inn Bed and Breakfast. She sunk her life savings, and then some, into this endeavor. She is known for her wickedly sinful and decadent baking. Her niece, Gwen, has come to stay, and get her act together, while helping her Aunt Nat run the Inn. Gwen has also developed a relationship with a local Princeton educated lobsterman, much to her mother's chagrin.

Natalie's best friend, Charlene, runs the local store and gossip shop. Her current fiance is the local deputy and artist, John.

Natalie has the knack of being involved in murder. None of which has anything to do with her, honestly! However, the local newspaper seems to be out to ruin her business by implying that she does. The mainland sheriff isn't so sure she isn't. This time, it is a friend who is being accused of murder. She knows it cannot be true and almost dies trying to prove it.

Natalie does not have a lot of common sense and she is constantly putting herself at risk by not thinking before leaping. This is a theme throughout the series. The series is fun and I love the references to Maine.

Not a bad read - I've enjoyed this series but I will say it is a bit predictable and a tiny bit formulaic. Still, it's an enjoyable read with an interesting story/plot.

When a sunken trip is found off the shore of Cranberry Island, marine archaeologists from the University of Maine and treasure-seeking archaeologists from a firm arrive to try to be the first to register the name of the sunken ship. One of the archaeologists turns up dead and suspicion falls to Eli, a Cranberry Island resident who had a run-in with the man earlier in the evening and was in the vicinity of the murder scene. Eli is arrested, but Natalie is certain that he is innocent and sets out to investigate other possibilities since the police don't seem interested in exploring them. There are actually a couple of subplots to the story as well. It's a great mystery in what is turning out to be one of my favorite cozy series. My only problem is that there is a place where a conversation repeats itself because the author apparently forgot that Natalie had already told John what she had discovered while snooping. The author or an editor should have caught this problem.
