Tinnitus Cure - Michelle T. Harper
Introduction
It is estimated that about 50 million Americans, and six million people in the UK experience a ringing or buzzing sensation in their ear, a condition commonly known as tinnitus. Although it can happen at any age, it is more common in elderly adults and it may affect them in different ways. In most cases, the sounds they hear may come and go, but in some, the condition can be severe and debilitating.
This book aims to help readers understand and cope with tinnitus; a common, but irritating and potentially disturbing symptom, which may or may not be related to other health problems. The remedies suggested in this book range from traditional methods used by most physicians to more natural methods that are gaining better results and more recognition in the medical field.
Many famous personalities have suffered from tinnitus and many are still learning to cope with the problem. People like Adolf Hitler, Charles Darwin and Vincent Van Gogh may have suffered from an unspecific chronic condition (probably tinnitus) for which they received numerous treatments. Ludwig van Beethoven, a great composer and musician, is famous for being a deaf tinnitus sufferer who was driven mad by the rushing and roaring sounds
he heard in his head.
In modern times, tinnitus continues to affect many people. It has been reported that famous movie and TV personality William Shatner contemplated committing suicide because an explosion on the set of his movie, Star Trek
kept him awake every night, making him feel he would never lose the noise inside his ear. Academy Award winner Barbara Streisand, a famous singer, actress, writer, film producer, and director, blames her short temper on her tinnitus, which she says has been with her since childhood. Former US President Ronald Reagan, also an actor himself, injured his right ear while doing a movie in the 1930s, leading to hearing loss and tinnitus.
What is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus originates from a Latin word, tinnire, which means ringing
or tinkle like a bell.
The American Tinnitus Association pronounces the word as ‘ti-NIGHT-us,’ but it may also be pronounced as ‘TIN-i-tus.’
Tinnitus is a symptom, rather than a disease in itself and it is defined as the perception of sound within the ear or the head in the absence of a corresponding external sound. Most people perceive a ringing sound, but they may experience the symptom in various ways. Some hear a buzzing sound, while others hear humming, hissing, whistling, roaring, clicking, ticking, or beeping noises. Still others describe the internal sound as sizzling, chirping,
