Chapter 1. From Philadelphia to Silverton, 1857

Blossom sat on the church pew. Her eyes were red from crying. She felt like she had been wrung out. She was tired from lack of sleep, her heart was breaking from her loss, and she had no idea how she was going to make it through the next few hours, much less the rest of her life.

She tried to focus her gaze on Brother Adams. She did not want to see the casket with her father’s body lying in it. He had been dead for over forty-eight hours now, but the girl could still not believe that he was gone. She shook her head and made herself focus on the preacher, and what he was saying.

She had missed her mother, but she had been happy.

Then her father had met Artelia Stinnett. Artelia Stinnett had a couple of good for nothing boys, and she had convinced Blossom’s father to marry her. Things had changed around the ranch the minute that Artelia and her boys had moved onto it.

The past two years had been very hard for Blossom. Artelia had made sure to try and keep Blossom and her father apart as much as possible. Blossom had barely spoken thirty words to her father in the last few days before he died, and before he had married Artelia she and her dad had talked all of the time. Blossom prayed each night that her relationship with her father would return to what it had once been.

Then her dad and one of Artelia’s boys, Tyler,
