Chapter 1. From Louisiana to Silverton, 1863
Vivian looked around the dismal room that she shared with her daughter Sarah and wondered how things had gotten so out of control in her life. Three years ago she had been a young wife of a cowboy, she had a new baby daughter, and she had been happy. Then one night there came a knock on the door telling her that her husband Jimmy had been in an accident on the trail drive he had been on. The man had given Vivian the pay that Jimmy had coming to him when he died and told her that they had seen to it that Jimmy got a proper burial. Vivian had stood in the open doorway staring after the man in disbelief. Her Jimmy was gone, and she was left alone with a new baby? In the blink of an eye, her life had changed forever.
Vivian had spent the last three years trying to keep a roof over Sarah’s head, without turning to some type of work that was immoral, or offensive to God. It took her about eighteen months, and the loss of just about everything she had, to realize that God could not provide her needs, or give her comfort, if she were busy ignoring his generous offerings. Vivian had fallen to her knees the night she realized this and begged God to forgive her and to come back into her life. From that day forward things had still been difficult, but Vivian knew that anything she truly needed would be supplied, as long as she had faith and let the good Lord work his miracles in her life, in His time.
Today Vivian had all of her belongings packed, and all of Sarah’s belongings packed. They were leaving Louisiana and heading for Colorado. About six months earlier Beth’s friend Elizabeth had given her a copy of the Matrimonial
