    Chapter 1

THEY TOOK EVAN! THEY took him from his own freakin’ apartment! What the hell?!

I ran the words over and over in my head, reordering and restructuring them, hoping to somehow make them make sense. My head shook slightly as my eyes ran back over the shards of glass and drops of blood sprinkling the floor. It felt like the entire world was watching me, waiting to see if I could solve the puzzle. I wanted to taste the blood to see if I could find out who had done it, but what would it tell me?

The more I looked around, all I saw was questions.

They took Evan from his apartment.

How? How did one extract a raging werewolf from a New York loft? How did they take him down without losing any of their own in the process? Who would be capable of such an act?

I’d seen Evan fight. It was a gruesome sight. If given a choice, I wouldn’t volunteer to go up against him myself. And yet...someone here had. And they had won.

So freakin’ help me if they killed him, I’ll kill them all!!

I began scrolling through mental rosters, trying to assemble a list of possible culprits. The lineup came up rather short. Of course, maybe he had been overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Didn’t matter how skilled a fighter you were if it was one against twenty, or thirty, or fifty. But that still didn’t explain how I wasn’t seeing any of them here—lying amongst the wreckage, or at least some dead vamp ash. Perhaps they had taken him by surprise? Maybe, in the heat of battle, they—

WHY THE HELL ARE YOU STANDING AROUND HERE ASKING QUESTIONS?!

Evan had been taken from his apartment.

There was no question in that. No debating what was going to happen next.

I was going to get him back. I had to.

I began pacing as I pulled out my phone with a trembling hand. There was a rage building up inside me, a strange humming in my skin that was getting impossible to ignore. As the line rang, I swallowed it down and stepped back into the shadows. Eddie answered on the third ring.

Thanks so much for sticking around to give me that big explanation you promised. I—

Evan’s been taken. I swallowed, my incisors sharp against my own tongue. From his apartment.

The words had adopted a familiar tune. Like a chant or a mantra. I could already feel myself falling in step behind them.

There was a pause on the other end. Wait...What? Eddie’s voice sounded strained. "What do you mean Evan’s been taken?" All the background noise behind him came to a sudden stop.

I really don’t think it’s that hard to understand. I was speaking in a low growl. A hoarse roughness spread its way across my vocal cords, serrating my speech.

An even longer pause. I mean, are there signs of a struggle? Did—

I’m going to kill them, Eddie, I hissed into the phone. I’m going to kill them all.

This time, the response was immediate. Tori, be smart about this. You can’t go in there by yourself. I could hear Trent and Finn arguing in the background. A car door slammed and an engine revved away, accompanied by Trent’s frustrated, Damnit!

There goes one, Eddie tried to reassure me. Finn’s already on his way to you. Just sit tight.

My lips curled back in a dark smile. "Eddie, when have you ever known me to sit tight?"

I hung up the phone and dropped to the ground in a single instant, searching the floor for clues, any indication of who might have been here and where they were going. Pieces of mail with today’s date had been torn open. The morning newspaper lay undisturbed on the table. Whatever happened, whoever came, it must have been just hours before.

My heart skipped faster as I realized there was still a chance I could find them. They had less than an afternoon’s head start. However, the humming in my skin was almost overpowering now, and for a second, I leaned back as a wave of dizziness threatened to overtake me.

I had felt these urges before; the urge to separate yourself from mind and body. Shake the skin loose and replace it with something simpler, something sleeker—complete with its own set of fangs. But the impulse had never been quite like this. It had always seemed to come from inside me, resonating in my very core. While this...this was like being tugged apart from the outside. Pulled to pieces by a force bigger than myself. A force that had to be obeyed.

The clouds cleared, and all at once, I was kneeling in the full light of the moon.

Oh shit. No, no, no—not now. I had to find Evan. I didn’t have time for this.

The walls around me began to shimmer and blur as my muscles came alive with a heat so intense it felt as though they’d been lit on fire. My fingers clenched into an automatic fist and I felt my phone shatter beneath them.

Please—not now. After. Literally any other time.

Like pulling on a string, my eyes lifted up to the moon and a piercing howl escaped my lips. My clothes fell loose and unnecessary around me, replaced by a thick coat of glossy white.

    Evan, I’m sorry.

My gaze dropped again to the splattering of broken glass on the floor. But this time, I didn’t see my blue eyes staring back at me. I saw the eyes of a wolf.

Change back, Tori. There has to be a way to change back.

I tried everything I could think of. Deep breathing, meditative thoughts. I even tried standing up on two legs. Nothing worked. Like a frantic, caged animal I darted back and forth in the apartment, claws clicking on the hardwood floors.

Come on Tori, you can control this. It’s a part of you.

Except even as I thought it, I knew it wasn’t true. I may be part werewolf, but I’d lived my life as a vampire through and through, never bothering to embrace the animal within. My lips pulled back in a frustrated grimace and I heard myself growl. I should have taken the time to master this when it first started. Finn had a clear harness on both sides of his personality and look at how it enhanced him. He moved like no one I had ever seen. He was able to take out a vampire elder without breaking a sweat. I’d trained myself enough as a vampire that I was able to do it without my werewolf side playing a part. Imagine how much better I could be if I embraced both halves of me.

There was no time to fret about that now. Screw fighting—right now, I’d settle for a set of human legs. I needed to track down Evan before whoever took him got too far ahead of me. I needed to...to pick up on the...to follow the...

With a shiver of excitement, I lowered my head to the floor. There it was. As clear as if it had been painted with glow-in-the-dark phosphorescents.

    The trail.

There were two people—one vampire, one werewolf—both moving together. I closed my eyes as I followed the scents around the apartment. There had clearly been a struggle, traces of them were everywhere. On the broken windows. The bookshelves. They had been throwing each other around like rag dolls, and it was soon apparent that
