Before the pop band, there was the archduke Franz Ferdinand. A typical Habsburg blockhead, he used the Mitt Romney strategy to appeal to his people: I am god's chosen ruler, thus you will like me despite the fact that I detest you with every fiber of my body. Franz Ferdinand wanted to keep Austria-Hungary together but hated the Hungarians and also the Czech. Despite living most of their time near Prague at Konopiste, the couple spoke barely a Czech word. His poor knowledge of Hungarian, after German the essential language of his empire, made it impossible for him to comprehend and understand his subjects and their desires.Instead, what he loved was hunting. He shoot every animal that moved in front of his gun. The death toll he amassed over the years is awesome. Today, he would be a champion player of Angry Birds. Combining his stubbornness with his talent of misunderstanding people, his trip to Sarajevo in 1914 could not end well. The city's garrison had been moved outside for maneuvers, thus his safety was assured by mostly hostile Serbian policemen. His inspection took place on the holy day of the Serbs which was another fault pas. When the royal couple survived the first assassination attempt, he stupidly decided to continue the doomed program. A mistake of his driver presented the avid hunter to one of his assassins on a silver plate. The rest is history. The only redeeming element in Franz Ferdinand's life is the devotion he showed to his wife and children. How the Habsburg clan and the Austrian nobles treated his poor noble but not noble-enough wife is a testament that those nobles demanded their own exit from history. It took a world war to depose most of Europe's nobility from the levers of power. Franz Ferdinand's fate was to be the first casualty of that war.A well written short biography of a dumb man, always at the wrong place at the wrong time.
