      Introduction

      Candle magic, for its simplicity, is one of the easiest & safest forms of magic, although this in no way detracts from its effectiveness. The candle itself establishes a magical focal point, allowing for the subtle energies of the universe within oneself to align with the subtle energies of the external universe. In each of us, a cosmos exists replete with all the colors, correspondences & symbolism of the universe itself. Therefore, in any situation where we release energy internally & externally, there is a harmonic vibration within the sea of subtle interactions that lays behind all things, allowing for change to occur in the manifest world. Candle magic, then, is the magic of attunement—it allows one to create a sacred & magically potent space with a minimum of instrumentation & its effects, though palpable, arise from the unconscious correspondence of planes, spiritual energies & material substances. Therefore, there is little risk involved. Having said this, candle magic lacks the precision of other forms of magic insofar as it causes general changes or trends to occur & cannot be expected to be as effective as certain other forms of magic in highly specific situations. Yet its weakness here is also its strength as candle magic has the capacity to strengthen all areas of one's life—especially if done regularly & according to astrological correspondences. There is no area of life which cannot be developed & heightened with candle magic, & there is very low potential for negative fallout as in the case of spirit summoning or other forms of magic. This aspect—& many others—make it an ideal magic for beginners to undertake.

      Spells fall under two major categories: the spiritual & the material, with the spiritual corresponding to the soul and unseen universe, and the material corresponding to both the body and the universe we normally encounter on a day to day basis. In this work, we have listed some suggested types of goals which can be achieved through this form of magic, listing also whether the goal falls under spiritual or material in aim.

      Candle magic, ultimately, is the magic of astrological correspondence as well. The candle color itself mirrors a certain planetary color, as well as its significance in terms of being either predominantly spiritual or predominantly material.

      It should be noted that the division between the material and spiritual is only a practical division, insofar as directing one's mind and magical focus to one or the other is done in order to incline the energies to operate on a specific sphere. In truth, all is One—yet, within that One there are ripples, waves, patterns and swirls, of which are manifest universe is composed. Therefore, the division between spiritual and material is used in order to properly orient and attune one's energies with a specific general trend. In our current reality paradigm, body and soul do exist as separate though reciprocal entities and therefore they should be treated as such from a magical perspective.

      Prayer, or the saying of a charm, is also recommended from candle magic. We recommend using the Hymns of Orpheus, translated by Thomas Taylor. It is a public domain work & very easy to come by. We recommend, however, that one either prints the book out—or just the hymns one wants—or purchases it. These, in turn, should be accompanied by a particular type of incense or fragrant oil.
