William - The Basics
Prince William was born on the 21st of June 1982.
At his birth, which took place at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, he weighed a healthy 7lbs 1.5oz.
As the Prince is entitled to be called ‘His Royal Highness’, he does not need to use a surname. However, in his military career, he used the last name Wales, and in other circumstances he has used the family name Mountbatten-Windsor.
Will’s parents - Charles, Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales - chose four names with which to christen him: William Arthur Philip Louis.
At the time of writing, William is second in line to the throne, behind his father Prince Charles.
A few hours before William married Kate, Buckingham Palace announced that he would be given the titles Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus.
William attended Eton before studying art history at the University of St Andrews. Once he had started his course, he changed to studying Geography, eventually earning a Scottish Master of Arts with upper second class honours.
After graduating from Sandhurst Military College, William joined the Blues and Royals regiment as a lieutenant. Although he was keen to enter active service, the government decided it was too risky for someone second in line to the throne - especially after specific threats had been made against his brother Prince Harry, who was also undertaking a military
