101 Amazing Facts about Foo Fighters - Jack Goldstein

    The Band

Foo Fighters (note: not The Foo Fighters) is a band formed in Seattle in 1994. Initially it consisted of just one official member - Dave Grohl.

Grohl founded Foo Fighters after his previous band Nirvana had split up due to the death of lead singer Kurt Cobain. Cobain’s history of depression combined with the fact that a ‘suicide’ note was found next to his body and a gunshot wound to his head led the police to declare his death as self-inflicted. Ever since, some have claimed this wasn’t the case, and that his death could actually have been murder.

The name Foo Fighters comes from a phrase coined by American pilots in World War II. With the world at conflict, airplanes filled the skies like never before, and many pilots saw things that couldn’t be explained at the time (and some not even now). Officially the phenomena were referred to as unidentified flying objects, or UFOs. Although today some people explain away the things that these pilots saw as freak weather occurrences or atmospheric conditions, many still believe what the WWII pilots did - that they were in fact alien spacecraft. The name those brave pilots unofficially used for the UFOs? Foo Fighters.

Running with the alien theme, Foo Fighters put all of their releases out on their own record label, Roswell Records. Roswell is a city in New Mexico, USA that is famous for an incident in 1947 where something (official reports since published say a secret Project Mogul surveillance balloon) crashed at a ranch, with conspiracy theorists
