About this ebook

This is a summary of Anthony Doerr's novel "All the Light We Cannot See" in which Antony Doerr narrates how the lives of Marie-Laure LeBlanc, Werner Pfennig among others, are all connected together during the tumultuous period of WWII. The Sea of Flames is at the middle of the story, though it is not the primary focus. The actual focal point is in the lives of the soldiers and civilians raised in poor homes and surviving in turbulent conditions, thus offering a human touch to the story of Europe in the Second World War.

Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See A Novel Summary - Ant Hive Media

This National Book Award Finalist novel is Anthony Doerr’s way of narrating the events of WWII. Unlike other historical fiction accounts, this book is a great story, providing a fresh perspective of the war and the people who lived through it.

    BOOK REVIEW

Anthony Doerr narrates how the lives of Marie-Laure LeBlanc, Werner Pfennig among others, are all connected together during the tumultuous period of WWII. The Sea of Flames is at the middle of the story, though it is not the primary focus. The actual focal point is in the lives of the soldiers and civilians raised in poor homes and surviving in turbulent conditions, thus offering a human touch to the story of Europe in the Second World War.

Every book has flaws, and this one is no exception. Marie-Laure is portrayed as a helpless girl, whose lack of sight is meant to make the reader feel sorry for her, as if growing up under Nazi occupation is not enough. Fredrick is also blatantly used to cover Werner, which might not sit right with some. Finally, Werner is shown a lot of sympathy, yet he is a German soldier who some might argue deserves no sympathy.

However, this novel has a lot of good stuff. Marie-Laure’s blindness is used to conceal the gemstone; which is a main focal point for the key narrative plots. Though Werner is portrayed as deserving sympathy, he still suffers his fate, thus avoiding unnecessary sentimental feelings associated with sympathetic characters. The other personalities are detailed and given a human touch without the usual heavy-handedness. The pace is quick and the chapters easy to read. It is split in a convenient manner, allowing readers to stop and resume at ease.

    The SETTING

The novel is set primarily in Germany and France during WWII. A lot of the action is based around a town in France, known as St. Malo, which happens to be close to the English Channel. Famous for pirate activity, it was bombed during WWII. The core focus of the book is the bombings, which are chronologically set. The events and locations mentioned are real, which makes the novel feel more realistic and believable.

    ANALYSIS OF PLOT

The novel’s plot is structured in a classical manner. It has 14 parts which start and constantly go back to a siege, as the reader is shown what happens prior to it
