      The Story

      Their lives are short. They can't hope for much. They plan elaborate deaths, as extravagant as any wedding.

      Alisse has her plan, and she is ready. Then she learns the truth.

      The Doctor

      The doctor is older than everyone. That isn't unusual. Some people get to live longer. They get better food, better drugs, access to protective gear to wear when they come and go.

      The mist was so heavy on some days that it was like Death had atomized and was standing there waiting for people to walk through him. The mist was even darkish, grim-ish.

      The doctor administered everything quickly and efficiently. He was even tender. Alisse noted that. After he had done everything, he laid his hand on her forehead while she was still flat on the table.

      This isn't a license for reckless behavior, he said. You'll never bear children. That doesn't mean that you are immune to communicable diseases.

      Alisse replied quickly. Yes. Thank you.

      Do you have someone in mind? the doctor asked.

      Yes, sir. Jason.

      The doctor eyed Alisse. He gave a tight, swift nod,
