Angel on Board
by Janet Eaves
Once upon a time, and it seemed a lifetime ago now, Jacob would have never imagined that life would become his enemy. Even when he'd huddled into the wool blanket, jacket, and gloves provided by the local Baptist Ministry, the cold seeped in to chill skin, tissue, and bone.
Nothing alleviated the cold in late December, not even on Christmas Eve.
His home, once a three story brick colonial filled with fine furnishings and the wardrobe of a successful businessman, had been warm. Toasty even, when he'd had the fireplace going. But that home was gone. It had been replaced by plastic, cardboard, and old newspapers. His possessions had changed as well, though only an hour before he had walked away from them: a tin cup, a tin plate, a fork, three shirts, one sweater, two pairs of jeans and four pairs of socks. Now he only had the clothes on his back, a pair of sneakers to cover his feet, and five dollars and fifty-nine cents in his pocket.
Five dollars and fifty-nine cents would get him where he was going.
His altered life was something he thought about all the time, as time was all he'd had for months. Not a day or night went by that his mind allowed him to forget all that he'd once had and all that he'd lost. And it wasn't just his things. He'd lost heart as well.
That was the hardest to swallow.
He knew he wasn't alone. Well, he was, but not the only one.
Others had walked this path before him, he knew that now. He met them every day on the streets. Sometimes, as they passed him on the grass or sidewalk with a grocery shopping cart filled with all the stuff they owned, he and the other person would acknowledge one another. Usually not with words, as everyone was careful not to trust. But with a nod. Though he had learned early on not to make eye contact. That invited fear or anger and could result in an assault. He's seen it time after time and wanted no part of it.
He hadn't stolen a shopping cart. Not because he feared being arrested. That would have actually been a blessing. Jail offered a warm room to stay in, hot meals to eat, and a bed to lay upon which would be wonderful no matter how hard the mattress. But he hadn't because it was wrong to steal. If he had nothing else, he still had his code.
And his plan.
Shivering had become second nature as autumn had given way to winter. Hunger pains were a constant reminder that the one meal a day from the ministry was barely enough to sustain. Body odor was surely there, but he couldn't remember when his nose had stopped working. Perhaps that was for the best. At least now he could barely smell the street vendor's offerings, which recently started including cinnamon and nutmeg honey buns as well as other Christmas delights.
Sticky-buns had been his favorite, once upon a time. They had been Megan's favorite, too.
Pain hit as it always did when he thought of Megan. His baby girl. His lost baby girl.
Sometimes he felt it a shame that he could still feel anything. Especially now that store windows were decorated with lights and filled with bejeweled gifts that would have had Megan's eyes wide with wonder and delight.
There was no wonder left to him, yet he could still see it in the eyes of those who avoided him like he was diseased. He wasn't diseased. He was broken. He wished people could recognize the difference. His heart ached over his loss, and that people would be so obviously cruel.
But had he been any different… once upon a time?
Probably not, Jacob realized, as he passed yet another man dressed in the red and white costume of Santa Claus. He would have gone happily on his way. Thinking only of himself and what he believed made a man successful. He had divided his life into nice little sections. His home life with Mary and Megan. His work life that was a constant climb toward the top. His social life, which had overlapped with work, because to get ahead you played with the big boys you wanted to join.
He'd made a mistake. A big one. He had let the climb become more important than anything else. His associates became more important than his wife. His marriage had suffered from neglect, and his daughter, his Megan, had loved him and had wanted his attention to the point of annoyance sometimes.
How had he found her cute loving ways annoying?
