    PROLOGUE

Oh, say! Can you see by the dawn's early light

    What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming;

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there:

Oh, say! Does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

    CHAPTER ONE

WNKW710 RADIO NEW YORK’S ALVIN CURRAN discarded the newspaper in the trashcan beneath his desk and then cued the news jingle. The radio studio was unusually quiet.

Alvin thumbed through his racks of music while his Producer Ken sat behind the glass partition of his sound booth and adjusted the sound levels. Alvin watched as Ken simultaneously balanced the phone in the crevasse between his shoulder blade and his generous wad of neck, which oozed atop a grey Grateful Dead t-shirt, which had seen better days.

This was talk-radio, and so he dressed shabbily; secure in the knowledge that the listeners couldn’t see him and therefore didn’t care about what he wore to work.

WNKW710 radio was parked in the enclave between good journalism and sensationalism. If it was newsworthy, it aired. With a seven second delay during on –air broadcast, Ken ensured that the risks of any profanities leaking on air were kept to a minimum.

Alvin had started the radio station from his basement in Hell’s Kitchen almost ten years earlier; back when Times Square was cuckolded by a seedy, sleazy, porn industry that festooned Eighth Avenue with bright lights; in contrast with its murky corners where the so-inclined could seek out porn movies or stare at window boxes showcasing raw talent. In the Post-Giuliani era, New York was remarkably cleaner than the Brighton-Beach-based Russian Mob’s books.

Alvin cued the jingle, which signaled the start of the news bulletin and then listened to Ken read the news bulletin and then lined up his next caller. Ken adjusted the microphone’s settings as the news bulletin’s closing jingle faded out.

You’re listening to WNKW710’s real talk live. Our first caller is Sam from Queens. Sam, you’re on the air, what would you like to say to the listeners tonight?

Hey, I really just want to give a shout out.

Go ahead. Alvin took the opportunity to sip from his jug of now lukewarm coffee.

There’s a guy killing New York City cops. I want to give him a shout out. Alvin’s eyes bulged in their sockets with horror before he shot a glance at Ken, frantically twirling buttons on the dashboard to get the caller off the air. Nothing was working.

Why would anybody in their right mind want champion a guy who’s killing innocent cops? Alvin spluttered into his coffee and added extra creamer while wiping his mouth.

Why do you assume they’re innocent? Sam sounded a little too smug, and Alvin wanted him off the air as soon as possible. Ken had tried his best but the caller was very persistent. Must have jammed the frequency or something beyond Ken’s expertise.

What evidence do you have to prove otherwise? Alvin shot a quizzical glance at Ken who was poised to cut to another commercial break. Ken shrugged his shoulders and strained to listen to the call.

I’m just saying. Somebody finally has the balls to step up and take out the trash.

Elaborate on what you mean by the trash. Alvin was intrigued now.

Everyone knows most of the Cops are corrupt. Killing innocent people and getting away with murder is only the tip of their corruption.

I wouldn’t say that everyone knows the Cops are corrupt. Over the years, unfortunately, there has emerged a criminal element among the NYPD; but years of solid good work by the Police Commissioner and Mayor has been poured into shutting it down.

"It’ll never stop. The rot stems from the top
