The Old Friend - M. H. Wilkie
The Old Friend
Merry pulled up in front of a large ranch-style home whose path wound towards a wide, teal blue front door framed by beautiful white wrought ironwork. Tall shade trees sheltered the house from the now blazing afternoon sun.
She felt just a little nervous. Although she and Barb had been closer than sisters in their university days, those days were in the long distant past. Would they be able to pick up where they left off? What would they talk about? Had she made a mistake agreeing to stay for a week?
Gathering her purse and some flowers she had bought for Barb on the way in to Glenview, she opened the front gate. Before she had gone three steps, the door was flung open, and there stood Barb. Unless things have changed, Meredith, I suspect you'll be wanting a cup of coffee before anything else,
Barb called on her way to the kitchen to switch on the machine. Merry laughed.
Oh dear, you remember my coffee addiction,
said Merry. Well that certainly hasn't changed over the years and I'd love one now.
Are you tired?
asked Barb. If you feel like lying down for a bit to catch your breath, just say so. I don't mind.
No, I'm not tired at all, Barb,
replied Merry truthfully. I got on the road early this morning to get a good start. I ate some fruit and cheese in the car for lunch. So I'm much more interested in catching up on your life than in napping right now.
OK, let's get your stuff from your car while the coffee's brewing.
The two friends went out to Merry's car to bring her bags into the house. At the
