Reviews for The Complete DLAB Study Guide
1 rating1 review
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This will be my second time I have retaken the test. My previous recruiters did not even mention to me there is a study guide with that tells you exactly what is on the test. This is an amazing resource for people taking the DLAB as of 2019 because all the material (all except the answers to the test) is in this book.

Introduction to the DLAB
What is the DLAB?
The DLAB or Defense Language Aptitude Battery Test was designed by the United States Department of Defense to test an applicant’s ability to learn a foreign language. It is a mechanism that determines whether a candidate is suitable to train as a military linguist or take on any other role that would require language studies.
Your results serve as a good indicator of whether you are suitable for admission into a language school such as the Defense Language Institute (DLI). The military takes this test very seriously, and studies have shown there is indeed a strong correlation between high-test scores and success at DLI. Administrators, therefore, use it as the primary device to gauge an applicant’s chances of success at DLI and consequently their ability to quickly learn a new language. Service members who manage to score well on the DLAB not only get selected for the top languages but also have a standardized score that will help to set them apart from their peers and competitors for the remainder of their career in the military.
The test is usually administered to newly recruited service members at the United States Military Entrance Processing Command after they complete the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). In most cases, it will be administered before the final job category is determined for the recruit. Recruits who score well on the ASVAB for linguist training are usually asked to take the test if they show an interest in pursuing a course at a language school. ROTC cadets in college also sometimes take the test while in college, but this doesn’t happen as much.
WORD TO THE WISE: Something to be cautious about is misinformation from recruiters who may be trying to recruit candidates for positions other than CTIs or other positions that do not require language skills. Remember that a recruiter has a certain quota
to fill and will steer you toward whatever they need. Recruits can take the DLAB before signing a contract, and they should insist on taking it. Often, recruiters might say they can always be reclassified later; however, this rarely happens. Recruits should always make sure they have the right information and are not misguided by anyone who could have ulterior motives like meeting quotas.
Officers looking to become a Foreign Area Officer (FAO) must take the DLAB in order to be considered. It is required that all officers applying to become an FAO must get at least a 110 score. If you are already fluent in a language in your area, then you will need to take the Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) and receive a score of 2/2 or higher in order to mitigate having to take the DLAB and attend DLI.
The Olmstead Scholarship is an extremely competitive scholarship that will send an officer to DLI to learn a language and then send them to get their masters at a university in that foreign country. Just as above, in order to be selected, you need an extremely high DLAB score. On average, most Olmstead Scholars receive 128 or higher.
Other communities within the military also require a potential member to take the DLAB test. Your scores could be a part of your application process and can be a significant factor in whether you will be selected for that community.
Requirements for Taking the DLAB
1. You must be in good standing with the military:
For you to be able to take the DLAB test, you either need to be a part of the US military or have orders from another agency (such as the Department of State or any other US government organization) dictating your requirement to take the DLAB test.
Furthermore, you must be in good standing and have enough time left in service to warrant taking the exam. This means that you cannot be in the process of being discharged or on your way out. You should have a good, clean record and ensure that you have nothing that would stop or preclude you from enrolling in an educational institution like DLI.
2. The test can only be taken once every six months:
