Synopsis: A pregnant woman leaves her job at a seedy garment factory in Boston to strike out and become a mail order bride to a rancher in Texas -- or at least, that’s what she thinks until she becomes aware of just how inexperienced he is and what he does on his mysterious out of town trips.

Grace Carter settled onto her seat in front of her sewing machine at the back of the sewing room. She was a moment late to work – just a moment – but the supervisor, Mr. Crane, was eyeing her viciously. She sighed, breathing carefully and deeply, trying to suppress the nausea she felt.

She had been working for two months after she knew she was pregnant and it was starting to become unbearable. Early in the mornings she was starting to experience nausea that made her dizzy it was so strong. She had been throwing up nearly every morning for the past week, running down the stairs of the tenement building to retch in the alley between her building and the next.

So far, she had managed to do so before arriving to the garment factory at six in the morning, but this morning she hadn’t felt the nausea until she walked in the door.

Bile rose in her throat. Grace swallowed, feeling her stomach lurch. She absolutely couldn’t vomit at the factory. What was she to do?

She stood from her machine. A few of the girls next to her looked up from their work to see what she was doing, but only for a moment before returning to their work. Grace squeezed down the cramped aisle to the front of the room where Mr. Crane was pacing.

Sir, she said, her voice small in the huge room abuzz with the sound of sewing. I need to go outside for a moment.

He raised an eyebrow, the disheveled hair of his eyebrows bristling. Miss…

    Carter.

Miss Carter, you need to return to your workspace. You can go outside when you have your lunch break.

Grace put a hand on her stomach. Her ten-minute lunch break wasn’t for many hours and she needed to vomit now.

Sir, I… How could she convince him? She needed to keep this job. It was her only way to save up the money she needed to care for this child. She felt the nausea rise to her throat once more. I feel quite sick.

Mr. Crane snorted in disdain. Return to your work, Miss Carter. You must remember to take better care of yourself. He didn’t say it in kindness, she knew. He said it because he wanted her to be able to produce the most she could.

How am I supposed to take care of myself when I live in poverty due to the inhumane wages of this job, she wanted to cry out, but she held her tongue.

Her midsection felt filled with sand. She couldn’t hold it in any longer. Sir, she blurted, I am pregnant. I am experiencing morning sickness and I very much need to…

Mr. Crane grabbed her by the arm. Miss! he said sharply, his eyes bugging. He pulled her through the door to the room and out into the heat of the day. The door shut with a thud behind them. Is what you are saying true? Are you sure?

Yes sir, Grace said in a flat voice. She knew she had made a terrible mistake, telling him. But it had convinced him to
