Asia: Mystery and Magnificence
––––––––
Take it as you wish, but in a lifetime of visiting and exploring, an average tourist will find it impossible not to land in Asia at least once. It’s the most populous, yet surely one of the most culturally rich and interesting parts of the globe.
The immenseness of Asia makes it not an easy task to describe its main features in a few words.
Each part of Asia has its own specificities – some more than others, but it’s hard to find a boring place there. The Middle East is the birthplace of nearly all contemporary religions: Christianity, Islam and Zionism. Places like Israel, Palestine or Jordan welcome religious pilgrims and people looking to trace their family roots, as well as nature lovers and history enthusiasts. Saudi Arabia welcomes millions of Muslims every year during the Hadj, while Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman dazzle us with luxurious hotels and out-of-this-world real estate development.
Central Asia, as well as Iran, are seen as remote tourist destinations. Iran is the modern embodiment of the Persian Empire and its cultural richness, while the rest of the central region of Asia has seen a relatively fast advancement in recent years, and that has attracted more visitors.
More to the East, China and Japan are the major tourist destinations of Asian continent. Needless to say, the vastness of China and its magnificent and ancient culture bring in millions every year. Places like the Great Wall or Shanghai have become global tourist spots. Likewise, Japan impresses with the high tech state of almost everything – from bathrooms to trains – in the country. Mount Fuji, Tokyo, cultural and urban experiences, as well as the cuisine, are reasons to visit Japan. Vietnam and Mongolia are two countries put on the map by wildness and peace.
Lastly, India and South-East Asia are in a category of their own.
India, a country with a population bigger than that of Africa, takes pride in the Taj Mahal, different temples and monuments, as well as a varied natural beauty.
In South-East Asia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines have a large Buddhist heritage and loads of natural monuments.
Maldives—with its astonishing nature, unbelievably beautiful waters and luxury resorts—can definitely be considered as a real pearl among countries that belong to the Southern part of Asia.
Enjoy!

The Land of Thousand Islands
––––––––
Haven't you ever leaned back on your chair at the office and imagine for a second that you're somewhere on a beach, surrounded by palm trees and calm waves?
Well, the exotic place you've always pictured in your mind looks a lot like the Maldives Islands. Situated in the Indian Ocean, close to India, this small archipelago is a popular tourist destination for people from around the world who want to take a break off from their busy lives.
Maldives is one of the top destinations when it comes to going on luxury vacations and spending pleasant afternoons on beautiful beaches, lying miles across over 1200 islands, many of which are unexplored and barely ever visited.
For visitors, this archipelago is a true tropical paradise, where they can have their getaway from busy city lives and cell phones.
You can rest and enjoy the beautiful beaches and waters at one of the many luxurious hotels and resorts, but staying only there during your vacation you will miss the rest of the island paradise.
You may presume that people living on Maldives are happy, as they get to experience every day what many others can only afford once in their lifetime – but, truth to be told, their reality is far from being perfect. The only sources of income for Maldivians are tourism and fishing, as their country has only rich waters and beautiful ocean-shores to offer. The aborigines’ lives and homes look nothing like any of the resorts built along the beaches.
Maldives, besides from offering luxury hotels and services, hides unbearable poverty in-between the lines.
The people of Maldives barely survived the great Asian tsunami more than a decade ago, which only contributed to their everyday struggles and made their difficult situation even worse. However, regardless the political and financial problems they are experiencing, the Maldivians are working on boosting education, opening new industrial sectors and providing a solid health care program for all citizens.
As at tourist, you will be insulated from the everyday lives of the Maldivian citizens who live outside the luxurious resorts, but knowing something about these people inhabiting this beautiful country of over a thousand islands, will surely raise your awareness on how they live.
There is nothing you can do to make their struggles better, but at least you are contributing to the economy and creating jobs in tourism, by visiting and enjoying this country.

1. THE FLIGHTS AND FIRST IMPRESSIONS
––––––––
This trip began one lovely summer morning and nothing foretold of the troubles ahead.
We didn’t know then what a huge mistake we had made: we did not bother to put locks on our travel bags or at least to wrap them. We were naïve and did not do anything to protect our luggage.
We had two suitcases with us; one of them was really huge as we had packed up a lot of our favorite things (including clothes, shoes, bags, jewelry, make up, and different devices like video cameras, etc.), planning to enjoy fabulous video and photo sessions during the journey to the Land of Our Dreams. This suitcase also contained a very beautiful wedding dress because the blessing ceremony was planned for 07-07-07 in a 5star hotel in the Maldives.
The second valise contained more clothes.
