Introduction by Matt Wiley
What a rush!
Ever since John Elway signed Peyton Manning to play quarterback for the Denver Broncos the initiative was clear: Win a Super Bowl.
We don’t have a Plan B,
Elway proclaimed the day Manning was acquired.
Finally on Feb. 7, 2016, the Broncos reached their goal of capturing a third Super Bowl title by beating the Carolina Panthers 24-10 in Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, Calif.
After disappointing playoff losses to the Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks and Indianapolis Colts the past three seasons, Elway called for change. He said he wanted players who wouldn’t be eliminated without a fight. He wanted a team that would go down kicking and screaming
in the playoffs.
He brought in Gary Kubiak and Wade Phillips and they instantly put their stamp on the Broncos. A successful team that was built to score points was suddenly a monster on defense. The high-flying offense took a back seat to the No Fly Zone
defense.
The Broncos ranked first in the regular season by allowing an NFL-low 283.1 yards per game, racked up a league-best 52 sacks and teams scored only 18.5 points per game against the Broncos.
In the AFC Championship Game, Von Miller was the best player on the field with 2.0 sacks and an interception. Derek Wolfe and DeMarcus Ware put constant pressure on Tom Brady and the Broncos knocked off the defending champion Patriots.

In the Super Bowl, the defense was at its best and Miller was the MVP. Miller’s sack and forced fumble, which led to a touchdown against league MVP Cam Newton, set the tone for the game. The Broncos sacked Newton six times and held him to 18-of-41 passing. The No Fly Zone
defense ranks among the NFL’s all-time best and right up there with the Orange Crush.
The Panthers, who averaged 31.2 points during the regular season, were dominated by the champion Broncos.
Full disclosure: It was a privilege bringing you, The Gazette reader, Broncos coverage this season. We tried to report on the team as a fan would want it covered. I grew up a fan of the Broncos. I used to sit in a lucky chair and I’d terrorize my mom if she tried to talk to me when the Broncos were on TV. I still grind my teeth when I think about what could have been if Michael Dean Perry had gotten off the field without a penalty against the Jaguars. The Super Bowl losses hurt. They always will. But the joy this team brings to this region outweighs any of the awful memories.

Our staff understands the impact of the Broncos. Paul Klee went to Denver Christian High School. David Ramsey graduated from Denver South High School. They grew up in Colorado, and know how important the Broncos are to you. Brent Briggeman grew up in Kansas. He saw the power of the Broncos fans, and Elway magic, from a different perspective based on the rivalry with the Chiefs.
In the end, Elway’s vision as a general manager came true. The Broncos kicked and screamed their way to another championship.
Does anyone doubt he will devise another plan to get the Broncos back here again?

Defense Is Undeniable
Lights-Out Performance from NFL’s Top Unit Bolsters Best-Ever Comparisons
By Brent Briggeman
Break out the superlatives, because this Denver Broncos defense just sacked its way into the best-ever conversation.
The defense carried the Broncos past Carolina 24-10 in a star-studded Super Bowl 50. The unit forced four turnovers. It scored a touchdown. It notched seven sacks. It held Cam Newton and the NFL’s top-ranked offense to 10 points.
Led by an MVP, 2½-sack performance from Von Miller, the defense even managed to push into the background the ready-made storyline of Peyton Manning quite likely riding into the sunset as a champion.
It was that good. It was as good as any defense on this stage. Ever.
I’ve never seen a better one,
said John Elway, the architect of this defense. There’s no question that they’re in the conversation with how they played today.
The NFL ushered out past Super Bowl MVPs as far back as Joe Namath for its golden anniversary, so maybe that feeling of nostalgia was just in the air. But after the game, the Broncos’ defense was talking as much about the 1985 Chicago Bears and 2000 Baltimore Ravens as the Panthers team it just dispatched.
