Introduction
Learning to Die
is a discourse about life and death. Falco Tarassaco, Oberto Airaudi, published it in 1978. It was his first book after founding Damanhur.
This is a book of hope. The hope that our life is always full, dignified and meaningful. The hope that we can be fully aware of who we really are as human and spiritual beings.
In this book, Falco shows us a way not to be afraid of death.
The experiences, the meditations, the suggestions contained in this text speak of a simple truth: death is a part of life, and it is one of our spiritual tasks to learn to accept it. We must know how it happens, so that we can die well and help our loved ones in dying.
Beyond life there is death, which is still life, says Falco. To speak of death is to speak of life. We start moving closer to death from the moment in which we are born. From one transition to another. Childhood and then adolescence help us to prepare for autonomy, adulthood and real life.
But at what stage of life, do we prepare for death?
Who teaches us how to die?
Death must be addressed as we live. It should be regarded as an important element of our existence during the time when we do not yet have direct links with it; when we are young and healthy; when we are not grieving the loss of a loved one. We just need to accept the most self-evident truths about life: everything with a beginning also has an end, and the end is certainly no less important than the beginning!
Normally, we do not enjoy considering the proximity of death, the sense of the unknown, the detachment from our body, from our things, and the loss of our loved ones. Falco simply suggests not to exclude the thought of death, not to deny its presence, and then trust our inner guidance in our encounter with it. Indeed, together with love, hope, hunger and curiosity, death is a companion in our lives. Falco seems to suggest that we should leave it a half-open door, so when the time comes, we can pass through it and embrace it without fear and confusion.
Falco presented this book forty years ago, a long time if we consider the average lifespan of a book today. A short time if we ponder the magnitude of the theme. He offers thoughts and reflections that can help us stop fearing that fateful and unavoidable moment, both for our loved ones and ourselves.
How? By reflecting on Learning to Die,
as Falco suggests. You will not find in this book an indepth treatment of the phenomenology of death—accident, suicide, euthanasia and then the burial or cremation—not because they are unimportant, but because what matters most is the serenity and recovery of the dignity that accompanies death and therefore accompanies life. What you will find, then, are practical suggestions, methods and directions on how to prepare for dying with awareness and harmony, and how to assist and comfort your loved ones during, and right after, their passage.
