About this ebook

What if you live a happy life; you live in a gorgeous home, have a nice car, go to a good school, and then war comes? Your city is bombed, your street is bombed. And, then, your neighbour is bombed. Your mum tells her parents, 'I have to take my daughter to safety before we are next'. Your grandparents say they won't go, they won't leave their home, but your mum is determined to protect you, keep you alive. The bombs fall everywhere around you. It's only a matter of time before they hit your house. Still your grandparents won't leave. So, with the greatest sadness, you wave them goodbye, not knowing if you'll ever see them again.

The journey to safety is difficult, but you can bear it, because you're heading for the loving arms of a good, safe country.
But, then, you arrive... and it isn't at all what you expect it to be. Your mum's memories of a good country die in the past. She's no longer a visitor to be embraced, but a refugee to be tolerated. Not even tolerated. An embarrassing burden, that the government has no idea what to do with, so they tie her up with red tape, and she and her daughter are bound to a no-man's land, no better than an open prison, outcasts within it.

Homeless, displaced, isolated and useless - a life hard to imagine if you've never suffered it. Destination: Freedom is a memoir based on the true life story of a young girl, Lily; of her mom, who gathers the courage to escape their war-torn homeland to arrive in Europe with two suitcases, determination and a large supply of hope.
